Assuming your laminate will be installed over a sub-floor, I suppose you could, but with that extra layer underneath your finished floor might not be even. You may get highs and lows, sort of like being warped. I would not install it directly on top of anything if at all possible. Buy a scrapper for $ 20, you'll be glad in the end.

***Do not put laminate over carpet OR uneven flooring.***

Yes they say you can put it over laminate but really think about it.... Your spending all this money to put it down why not do it right??? Yes it seems like alot of work to rip up the carpet but it will give you a better base to go on. Also there is a sound reducing plastic/foam that you SHOULD put under the laminate. Its cheap and worthwhile.

A guy I know from work put it over carpet and he has had issues with it since due to the carpet. DONT DO IT.

Not a good idea. Eventually as the glue ages the carpet will start to loosen and so will your laminate floor then you not only have to rip out the carpet but your new floor as well. Take the time and energy now to do it right.

Before installation of the laminate you are supposed to lay a polyethylene foam or other approved underlay of 2-4mm / 1/8"-3/16". I really doubt that your carpet is that thin. You will be wasting your time and money if you continue without doing it to the manufactures specifications.

Yeah, I'd do it. The laminate won't come loose, each piece is connected to the piece behind and in front of it. The floor won't be any less level then the rug underneath it. Besides if you are unhappy with it, just pull it back up. Its not nailed or glued down you know.

as long as the carpet is not shag and the laminate is the quick lock type not the glue type I say go for it. remember though your floor will now be that much thicker and you may need to cut down doors and install transition strips.

NO you can not put any flooring over carpet.
That floor will move a lot on you if you do, and just think of all the $$$ you will be out of.
do it right the first time.

Not normaly, but if it is thin , flat carpet (1/4 inch or so) it would be okay.
