I want to try out 11 but I don't want to fully abandon media player 10 yet. I'm just wondering if both can be installed on the same computer.

Look if you want to use microsoft media plyer, you got to use windows media player 11. No windoes program allow separate install. Sometimes you can uninstall and rollback but never works smooth. Its MS buggy feature. My honest suggestion here is that always use the latest version because it comes with bug fixes in addition to better feature support.

having said that, i can give you another good suggestion for you to consider. Just forget about windows media player.
Try vlc player(www.videolan.org). It is an open source free media player. the great power of this is that it can play almost any format in the world and you don't have to download any thing extra(like codecs etc). i hgihly recommend this.

Another alternative is to use rela alternative which comes bundled with media player classic. this is another powerful combination because this can play all real player files and all natural files as done by windows media player. So, you can actually uninstall real player etc and only use one single player to play everything. get it from here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm

Vlc player can't play real video but can play real audio. Now if you don't mind keeping real player and use vlc for all.

i personally use both vlc and real alternative. i never like real player as it installs junks in your pc.

Sorry gave you some extra info but honestly thought that it would better to give you a reall assessment.

You can't install both. 11 is a upgrade for Windows Media 10. Anytime you upgrade it uninstalls the previous version. You can upgrade to 11. If you don't like it uninstall it and reinstall Windows Media 10.

You can't run both simultaneously. You can however, install 11 and use add/remove programs to take off 11 and revert back to 10 if you decide that you don't like it.
