It pretty much depends on your type of cabbage. first, if its larger you should definetly cut it up, but if its a bit smaller (I Mean small)
you might want to leave it. but i would just cut them up anyway for all the flavor to come in and out. it is faster also. if you put any juices in the pot or something, yeah you shoul put the cabbage in cut up. then all the flavor and moisture will be contained in that veggie. Then when you cut the cabbage to fit in the plate all of the juices sqeeze out and so does the flavor. It is a really great taste. this would probably work with many other veggies too!!

I've always chopped up my cabbage a bit (a dozen or so hunks) before steaming; in fact, I don't think I've ever seen a steamer basket big enough to do a whole head.

This recipe calls for shredded cabbage. I'd say shred it. I'm not sure how steaming it whole would work.

STEAMED CABBAGE

1 1/2 c. water
1 med. size cabbage head
2 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 tbsp. sugar or nutrasweet (Equal)

In medium size skillet or saucepan combine water and cabbage (shredded with a knife). Add salt and pepper and butter. Cover and cook over medium heat until tender, stirring occasionally. Add sugar or nutra sweet before removing from skillet.

I cut mine up and mix it with different spices. I usually saute it b/c I don't care for steamed cabbage. Go ahead and cut it up b/c you want to make sure its cleaned thoroughly before you cook it.

Cut it into wedges and steam it. Cut it into quarters, and then into smaller wedges if you'd like.
