I wouldnt bother mate cuz if it was my dog you killed and then asked me for money, I would batter you to a bloody pulp and leave you in the street.

Well, if the dog was out running the streets, the owner IS at fault. As much as I feel sorry for the dog, would the rest of you feel so sorry for the dog if it was mean, running loose and had mauled or killed a child??
Where I'm from, the law is all dogs should be fenced in or on a leash, or pay a heavy fine.
By the way, last New years Day, my oldest son went to the city with my car, a big dog comes running out in front of him, the streets were icy and he couldn't stop. What if because of that dog my son collided with someone else & had gotten hurt, killed or someone else had?? Needless to say, it did alot of damage to my car, so much so that the auto body shop said the car was a "write off" meaning it would cost a small fortune to fix it! That was the first accident my car was ever in, and it's a 1990!! NOT IMPRESSED!! Oh yeah, the dog was fine and ran off!! I think pet owners need to take some responsibility!!!!!!!

I do not think it is heartless to ask the owners for some money if the dog had been running around loose then unfortunately it is the owners responsibility.
Before any of you jump up and down - be realistic.
I have 3 dogs and all of them are insured, god forbid that one of them would get loose or out of my garden and wander onto the road and cause an accident. Dog owners have to take responsibility for their dogs, regardless of the situation. It is very unfortunate that the dog died and I feel sorry for the family.

Oh, that is sad and I bet it shook you up too. Firstly it is the fault of the dog's owner as it shouldn't have been on the street alone, it could have killed people by causing a pile up on the road or bitten someone. It may seem heartless to ask them for damages to your car but I think it is also a reasonable request. Check with your insurance to find the best way to deal with this situation. Good luck

If I was you I would get the owner to pay for the damage. I've seen how much damage a dog can do to a car and after all the law states that dogs must be on a leash when out in public and if it wasn't it is the owner who is at fault. I'm assuming that the dog ran out in front of you and you didn't have time to stop. And look at it from this point of view, if something fell of your car like a wheel trim for example and hit his dog and injuring it he would claim compensation from you for vets fees etc wouldn't he. Good luck.

I can certainly understand your desire to be reimbursed for the damage to the car. If the dog was just running loose because its owner allowed it to do so, then yes, go ahead and ask. (Of course someone irresponsible enough to let a dog run probably won't be responsible enough to agree to pay for the damage, either. But you could try reporting it to your ins. co.) On the other hand, if the dog somehow got loose by accident, then no, just chalk it up to your human kindness to let it go. If you don't know the circumstances of the dog's having been loose, go by your gut feelings according to how distraught (or not) the owner seems to be. You, the dog, and the owner all have my sympathy . . . I think I would crumble to pieces if my dog ever got hit. Good luck. (BTW, if you happened to be speeding or not fully obeying the law while driving, let it go.)

Yes, very heartless, have you no idea how awful they'll be feeling? Do you know you're supposed to inform the Police that you've hit a dog? They're classed as working animals (even if it's a poodle) same as horses and the law says the Police have to be informed.

Actually the owner is liable for repairing your car. Most places have leash laws, and I'm assuming this dog was running loose, the owner was breaking law, and is liable for damage.
Sorry you hit and killed the dog. Just let the owner know that you're sorry too.
It still doesn't change the fact that it happened, and that they were breaking the law and are liable.

firstly i know how easy it is to run over a dog as mine ran out the door once and got hit luckyly he survived and is still around at a ripe 15yrs of age. it wasnt my fault or the drivers fault it just happens unfortunatly but i would have paid for any damages if asked because the dog is MY responsibility. I would ask for compensation but through my insurance as my vehicle is my livlihood even though i would feel guilty but at the end of the day THIS STUFF HAPPENS. its a shame but i dont think its heartless of you and please if it wasnt your fault DONT blame yourself it was a freak ACCIDENT. if a driver hit your car and died you would be compensated wouldnt you! ignore alot of people here but i would recommend not posting a question like that in this kind of forum in future id put it in the law one personnaly

I once read that it is a legal requirement that after killing a dog in a road accident you are obliged to report the matter to the police. The reason for this apparently, is so that you can get financial compensation from the negligent dog owner.
