I just took a gander at a type of cooking wine in my fridge. It has a 17% alcohol content and is only 1.5 percent salt. For every two tablespoons there is 180mg worth of salt. This is less than the amount of salt in a tablespoon of soda. Why then, can I not use it to get drunk?

Why use the cooking wine when you can make your own. The recipe is simple: make a strong bag by double or triple-bagging some plastic trash bags and knotting the bottoms. Into this, pour warm water, some fruit or fruit juice, raisins or tomatoes, moldy bread (put inside of a sock for easier straining) or just use yeast if possible, and as much sugar as you can get a hold of (or powdered drink mix). Now tie off the top of the bag, letting a tube of some kind protrude so the thing won't explode while it gives off carbon dioxide. Now hide the bag somewhere and wait at least three days (longer is preferable). It won't be pretty, but it will get you drunk.

Of course you can drink it to get drunk. But it will taste salty. 1.5% salt in wine will taste much saltier in wine than it would in soda. And most cooks do not even use cooking wine because of it's added salt. The rule of thumb in the world of cooking is that if it's not good enough to drink, then it's not good enough to cook with. So I'm sure the reverse is true as well .. if it's good enough for you to cook with, then enjoy!

My motto is drink what you like!

You can drink cooking wine, but why would you? It's terrible.

Good chefs know that you should never cook with a wine you wouldn't enjoy drinking a glass of. If cooking wine tastes bad to drink, then what makes you think it's going to make the food taste good??

Try a nice Riesling for your cooking instead. You will notice the difference!

Never cook with a wine that you wouldn't drink. your food will taste better for it. Cooking concentrates the flavor of the wine. If the wine is not right for drinking, it will only taste worse cooked. Rule of thumb, if you would drink it cook with it.

Do not buy wines labeled "cooking wines". They are horrible and usually have a lot of sodium in them.

It tastes disgusting in the first place. With that being said, why would you put it in your food? Cook with a wine that's good to drink as well.

hahaha chug that **** back my friend!!!
thats what the bums (and me when im broke) on the street drink!
for 6.50 canadian you can get a 26er of cooking sherry which is 20%, enough to get you smashed if you chug it back, much more actual alcohol content then a 40 of malt liquor (almost twice as much), and it only cost a dollar more!

you totally can drink it but my only "motherly advice" is this: i once stole a bottle of cooking brandy from my culinary school and we all took turns doing shots of it. none of us got very drunk, it burned like HELL going down and we all felt like DIRT the next morning. but if that's the feeling you're going for...knock urself out!!
