To me, it sounds like you need to worry less about how much money you're going to make and think about what you're going to enjoy doing. A high salary in a well respected field won't matter much if you hate your job.

I agree with Wavy, my own view also is this; you have to rely upon being employed if you work in a science-specific field, if you take up plumbing you can be self-employed, and once you have tried working for yourself you won't usually want to work for some one else again. Its better being independent in a job that is currently in high demand, and where there is not an oversupply of similar professionals ie plumbing, earning the 50 grand means you have forked out a hugh effort and time as well as dealing with a myriad of social and physical conditions in order to make the numbers add up. I would prefer to be in a position career wise whereby I was skilled in two trades and have degrees in more than one professional field, but no one thinks about the real prospect of unemployment when they are just starting university.

A plumber or Electrician will always have work. Will a Molecular Biologist?
However, the Plumber will never get a Nobel Piece Prize or any other International Recognition for His or Her Work!
Ask yourself this - Do you want to be Well Paid, Famous or Possibly Both?

Depends if you want to work 14 hours a day 7 days a week for years before you get to earn that mythical figure. Most plumbers I know earn around 30-35k, as sub contractors the only ones who earn 50k + are the main contractors.

Don't be scared of anything at all,
everything we have is all we need
all the spotlights streaming into angry skies,
means there's no-one watching as we leave.
I don't know but it's a good song isn't it !!
look, if u got a good brain u should find something.
u could try for something in the environmental dept.
how about an EHO ?
if i had my time again i might have gone for this one with my science degree.
I typed in (careers with science qualifications) into the yahoo search engine and was quite surprised with what i got !
u could try the environment as i have said but also the nhs and quite a few others. have a look.
the first, science and environment gives a view of possible careers for science post grads etc.

If you are intelligent, your abilities will serve you in whatever field you take up. If you value money, pure research is not a great field. In order to be a plumber, you need good mechanical skills and spatial relations to succeed. Take you aptitudes and your interests and figure out what job will satify your financial and intellectual needs.

Do what you want. Look at it this way: would you rather like doing a job and not earn quite as much as you could, or would you rather abhor and detest a job so much that you absolutely dread going to it but earn that little bit more?
It is your future, and thus your choice. Don't be persuaded into something you don't want to do; follow your desire.
