Go to Sam's or Costco (depening on where you live) and buy h'or Deurves (I don't think I spelled that right).
Get mini quiches and pigs in a blanket. I think if it is a party, you need finger foods that people can eat while walking around.

A hearty chili always goes over well. And a homemade cheese ball with crackers is always nice. Though you said not to put it, a homemade pizza could be very nice. Or perhaps, buy some loaves of bread (preferably French bread of some type) and everyone can make their own pizzas in an oven.
Of course, you have to have cake. Cheesecake is a nice change of pace for a birthday party. Or try an ice cream cake if you've never experienced the Dairy Queen birthday love before.

If you want a nice buffet type party, keep it easy and finger foods.Take and make a sandwich meat&cheese tray. Then get a basket and put your sliced rolls in it.Put the basket, tray, condiments, large green salad, then heavier salads.Potato, pasta, cole slaw, and a fruit tray. You can have chip&dips sitting around the room. The cake and plates can set to the side by them selves.Drinks are to your liking.Usually tea, coffee,or water for an adult party.Use nice crystal to make it look real classy, or make it a easy clean up---plastic& paper.Have a great party.....

What do they like? Since it's a surprise party, it makes sense to serve what the guests of honor will enjoy.
