I have a 10-megapixel camera myself.
RAW files are around 10MB
Best quality jpg is around 5.5 MB
Average quality jpg is around 3 MB
So if you shoot everything in best quality jpg, you can fit 1000 / 5.5 = 181 pictures on a 1GB card.
---
Holy crap, at 1600x1200 ?! That's not even TWO megapixels. Why spend extra for a 10 MP camera?
At 1600x1200 you'll probably get jpg files in the neighborhood of 300 kb. So make that 1000 / 0.3 = 3000+ pictures on a 1 GB card.

Why would you buy a 10Mpixel camera to save 1600x1200 pictures ????
Get a 3Mpixel point and shoot off of ebay.
10Mpixel sensors are typically in higher end camera's now use it what's it good for and save the images in raw+highest quality jpeg: resulting in some 15 Mbyte per snap.
Hence the 1Gbyte is rather small, I'd not recommend to buy memory cards smaller than 4Gbyte for any semi pro camera.
BTW: 10Mpixel sensors typically are not 4:3 but 3:2 in aspect ratio so if you have (only) 1200 lines that would be 1800x1200 resolution.

Well a 1 GB card holds 1000MB. The number of pictures will depend on your camera's resolution (megapixels), and how your camera is set. You will probably be able to store from about 400 to 2000 or more pictures on a card that size.

A 10MP camera using a 1GB SD card....shooting Superfine/best quality resolution (which you should always use) will allow...
approx. photos 190-250 photos (depending on the brand of camera used, as their 10MP file sizes vary).
Shooting in RAW will allow much less.
