my wife had a baby about a year ago, and she keeps buying him all these big, soft toys.
the baby only has small little hands though, so i was hoping to buy him something like lego, or maybe another type of toy that is no bigger than (for the sake of the question) his mouth.
where is the best place to buy these baby toys?

Go for Megablocks. They're the same but bigger and safer for little ones than the Lego. You can get it at any toy store or places like Zellers and WalMart.

The baby is a year old? I think you would be disappointed in what the baby does with the real lego's. He is not old enough to build things or manipulate them properly. That is why they make the "big lego's", because bigger blocks are easier for babies to play with and build with. Not the smaller lego's, which are easier for a baby to choke on.
Never buy a toddler any toy that can fit inside a toilet paper roll.
And you chose some very interesting words when writing this question....
"another type of toy that is no bigger than (for the sake of the question) his mouth"
Sounds like a fake question to me.

Your wife is smart, you seem to not know a thing about raising a child. Or preventing the death of a child for that matter. It doesn't matter how small his hands are, if you buy him any toys that are "no bigger than his mouth" then you are purposely endangering your child. Maybe you should be more active in your child's doctor visits. Being one year old now he is capable of doing a lot more with his hands than you give him credit for. Try picking up a parenting magazine, book or look on line. Over 60% of suffocation deaths in children under the age of 3 are caused by small Lego's. Lego's - above any other small item, including loose change and hair barrettes! If you love your child then you would follow your wife's example and you could really learn a lot from her, DO NOT BUY AGE INAPPROPRIATE TOYS FOR YOUR BABY/TODDLER!!! (unless you have a $multi-million$ life insurance plan and lack of a loving soul.)

I understand that you want ti build the childs small motor skills but lego isn't appropriate. The baby will mouth the lego and may swallow it. Its a choking hazard.
Instead, look for those cool baby toys where the baby puts the big sqare in the square hole and the triangle in the triangle hole......know what I mean?
or one of those toys where the baby can grasp a plastic hammer to bop the animal heads? These toys are in Target or Walmart or Toys r us.
They will help develop your childs small motor skills and help the child learn to grip, grasp and manipulate.

Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, any place that has toys....however, you should consider even though he's a toddler now, he still needs bigger toys (blocks) that he cannot fit into his mouth or he'll choke. You can look for age appropriate things at the places listed above and buy something that is in the age range as your son because they put those numbers on there for what their ability is, as well as to guide parents as to what is still too small for babies/toddlers to play with (choking hazzards).

I would COMPLETLEY watch the ages on the boxes of these things you get. Legos are VERY small and I think the age on those are like at LEAST 3. BUT, you can get the larger (and I mean LARGER) ones that are like Legos that have a younger age requirement. You can get them anywhere...Toys R Us (but they will be more expensive), Walmart, Meijer (If you have Meijer), etc.
However, my daughter is JUST getting the concept of putting them together and she is 2. Don't expect too much building for a small baby!

I know this is not in your question but if the toy can fit down a toilet paper tube then the baby can choke on it and it can be stuck in their throat. Legos' are not a good idea until older.
A good idea is Little people by fisher price or Weebles. They do make bigger legos for older children which you child may be in the age range for them.

Legos are not appropriate for a one year old--they are a choking hazard. Stay with toys designated for children under the age of 3.
Good luck!

If he's a year old, you need something bigger than his mouth because of a choking hazard. There are teething toys available at almost any grocery store or wal-mart. With one year olds, the rule of thumb is no toy(s) that can fit into the end of a paper towel tube.

I can only hope that you are not serious. If so I am very scared for that child!! You have to think logically about the fact that if the toy is able to fit in the child's mouth, your child CAN CHOKE TO DEATH on a lego or anything similar in size. Please consider your decision on toys extremely carefully as your child's life is at stake.
