Chest x-ray and if suspicious lesions are seen on a plain x-ray the doc will order a CT scan of the lungs. Once that is done if they feel it really is cancer they will do surgery with a biopsy to confirm the type of cancer it is and then proceed with treatment.

The answer depends on whether or not the patient has symptoms.

In SYMPTOMATIC patients--that is, those with chest pain, coughing up blood, shortness of breath or other symptom that might suggest lung cancer--chest xrays, biopsy, physical examination and bronchoscopy (looking down the breathing tubes) and other tests are good at finding cancer if it exists.

However, in PATIENTS WITH NO SYMPTOMS there is no satisfactory method to SCREEN patients for lung cancer. A screening test is one that can be applied to a lot of people at low cost and detect serious disease before it becomes more serious or fatal. A pap smear is a screen for cancer of the cervix. Pap smears work very well. Similarly, tests for blood glucose level screen patients for diabetes. Both are cheap, easy to administer and are pretty good at separating those who have disease from those who do not.

The problem with ANY test, especially screening tests, is this: many positive tests occur in people who do not have disease. These results are called FALSE POSITIVES. They result in a lot of anxiety and cost in patients who are actually healthy. AND just the opposite also occurs: many negative tests occur in patients who actually have the disease. These results are called FALSE NEGATIVES.

False positives and false negatives are so much of a problem with lung cancer screening that no satisfactory SCREENING test exists.
