The question is flawed. The state of California is home to a large amount of churches including many "super-churches" that hold over a thousand people. The northern Midwest has a large population of devout Lutherans. The large Hispanic populations of the southwest have brought the catholic church out of the endangered species list.
I have traveled and lived all across the country and the only two places that did not seem to have a large representation of religious people were the northeast and pacific northwest.

Using the logic that the Northeast and pacific northwest are not full of religious people and the rest of the country is, then you are correct. However because you are referring to the south as in below the Mason Dixon line, the question is flawed.

If the question were legitimate, the answer would be because people in the south are not as self absorbed and are willing to admit that they are not the highest form of intelligence in the universe, which Yankees seem to have a problem with

Part of it is probably because there are smaller cities (not always) and in smaller cities, with less schools, people are less institutionally educated. As people climb up the institutional ladder they begin to question everything and become prideful, which leads to thinking you can do anything on your own and that God was created as an excuse for weakness. I also believe the South was more racially diverse, contrary to what you say, and that the minorities of the South tend to be very religious. Because of this there became religious groups to provide for all the desire to be religious.

I think it's because most are descendants of the immigrants who came here for freedom to worship. I'm not from the south but my ancestors are. If you notice the majority are brave and will fight for our freedom. You won't find many cowards in the south.

Ignorance? No . . . . their smart like a fox.

The southern states seem to be ripe with christian special interest groups, like the Christian Coalitliion, and the KKK among others. These groups have a "you'd better fit in" mentally or "you'd better leave"

The farther South, the more inbred they are. That is why they have special names of endearment for mother/sister and father/grandfather.

It is the culture of the South. You Yankees are godless heathens who trust in yourself to the exclusion of everything else.
