Some of my christian friends believe that God's concept of time is different to our own. Hence the creation story is a metaphor.

If you are a Christian then you know that the Lord Jesus Christ created all things. Ephesians 3: 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: However if you don't believe the Bible then you are not a Christian for it is the only source that tell you that the Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins. Here is some questions for you to answer your question about creation. How is time measured? It is measured by the time the earth goes around the sun. If this is true then How can you say the earth is only 6000 years old because the sun was not created until the fourth day? Also the Bible tells us that in the biginning God created the Heaven and the Earth. When was the the biginning? The earth has been here forever and there is noway of measuring how long it has been here. Genesis 1: 1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

If everything was created instantaneously, it would still take a lightyear for light to reach its destination a year later...or whatever.
So if the universe was created 6,000 years ago, it does not mean that light can only go to something 6,000 light years away. Maybe you should have asked something more along the lines of how are scientists finding things more than 6,000 years old...such as dinosaurds or civilizations 10,000 years old, or the Ice Ages, etc.
But I didn't know that the theory of creation was that it was only 6,000 years ago. I knew it was a group of people's belief, but not for everyone who believes in creation...

God works in mysterious ways. :-)
The Universe is much older than 6,000 years. Some Irish Bishop (Ussher) came up with this figure during the 17th century. No where in the Bible does it state "God created the Universe 6,000 years ago."
Here is a much better way to look at it, in my opinion. Why couldn't God have created the Universe via the Big Bang ( or steady state theory, or any other way) Why is just having things appear at his whim any more miraculous than a Universe that slowly evolved? If you look at the Universe, our beautiful planet and all of its life, how God got it where it is today and how long it took is a moot point. The point is that all is his creation, however he decided to create it and for however long it took.

I don't really know the answer to your question, but I am also a Christian who believes in Creation. I do not necessarily believe that the world is only 6,000 years old, and I don't think Christians need to accept all the facets of "bible-thumpin straightlaced creationism" In fact, microevolution is pretty much a proven fact. It's macro that becomes a problem.
But I'm digressing. Bottom line: fundamentalist creationism is NOT entirely scientifically accurate, because the Bible isn't a science text.

The Creation story speaks of the worlds creation, and only in passing the creation of stars etc. Also, as far as I understand, the "days" recorded in the bible were translated from a word meaning the passage of time, or sometimes written as eons. I do not think everything was created in 144 hours as some do, but over eons of time. In fact prior to the suns creation (in the creation story) time was marked in days. How do we know the length of a day prior to the suns existence. Another point is that no one really claims to know how long Adam was in the garden, if there was no death, this could have happened for quite some time.

This question has been asked a few times before. I think the last time I saw it asked, someone said that the universe has expanded since creation (or something like that).
I believe in God, too, but I, too, have a difficult time believing that the world is 6,000-10,000 years old.

Seeing things that are 4 billion years away, refers to distance and not to the age of the universe.
By the way, who told you that the universe is 6,000 years old? The current scientific consensus holds the age of the universe to be about 13.7 billion years and not 6,000.

No one can know for sure how long the 6 days of creation were, or how long a day for God is. God doesn't experience linear time.
It's human arrogance to assume that God works in a 24 hour Earth day. A day for God might be expressed as "age of the universe/6"
Or perhaps Genesis isn't literal.

God, being God, could have created the ray of light from a particular source as already reaching such and such a distance. The only thing for a person, believer or otherwise, to ask in this scenario is perhaps why God created it the way he did.
This question is not really a problem, as there is no inherent contradiction.
Be well and God keep you.
