I'm having trouble with meditating. First of all, I can't ever get myself to start doing it. When I do it, I never feel like I'm doing it right. This happened when I was a Christian and I couldn't bring myself to pray enough, and now I don't feel like I meditate enough. I am frustrated with it because afterward I don't feel any sharper or more alert, or more relaxed. Does anyone have any good advice on how I can improve my practice? I have tried "following the breath" and visualizing things and even mantras, but nothing seems to help. Advice on Buddhist meditation is preferred, but general tips on meditation could help, too.

All of these will work, but they are not easy. Simple, but not easy.

Patience is important. Also taking some time, at least 20 to 30 minutes each time. Enough time for your mind to calm down.

It also helps to keep yourself from fidgeting. Fidgeting is just another way for your mind to avoid the silence of meditation.

Meditating with a group will help to. I'm not sure why, but it does.

I could never get the "following the breath" to work either. If you're an auditory person though, you can try listening to some relaxing music (I like chakra balancing cds). Focus all of your attention on the music, listening to all of the intricacies of the sounds. When your mind wanders, bring it back, but do not punish yourself for wandering. Just remain calm and begin to focus again. You may not notice results right away, but the more you practice, the more you will find yourself better able to quiet your mind and concentrate. Good luck!
