I can't believe the horrible answers on here! Many boys have to have this operation for medical reasons. This is probably the case here. How dare some of you accuse this mother of child abuse! Its outrageous - you don't know the circumstances at all.
My friend's little boy had it done but all i can remember (it was years ago) was that he wore a long baggy T shirt and no pants for a few days. I'm sure the doctors will give good advice.
My ex husband who is all of 50 also had to have this op recently. I wish people wouldnt jump to conclusions about things they know nothing about.

My advice: ignore the radicals and fundamentalists; these people are against simply because they are not happy with *their* circumcision, they certainly need help.
I have four sons, all of them circumcised, none had ANY problem. I was there when the doctor did the procedure, and they were perfectly fine. Just a little normal crying at the beginning and then they relaxed as the doctor worked. They were peacefully sleeping by the time he finished. A week after the procedure their penises were completely healed and they were happy and joyful.
CIRCUMCISION IS PAINLESS, EASY AND VIRTUALLY NO-RISK.
I never had any doubt that I would have all my sons circumcised too, even after some people *tried* to convince my of their catastrophist and surrealistic theories against it.
It’s just SO MUCH BETTER
Make the best decision for you son: have him CIRCUMCISED.

Vaseline to protect from infection and loose clothing. He will be very sensitive for a while after the foreskin is cut. Brave boy!!
But I am wondering why wait till he was 3 and not do it when it during the days he was born?
My 1st born was a boy, I chose not to let the Doctors circumcise him because of the thought of the pain he would go through. I also did the research and the benefits of circumcision was real small. If you have to do it for medical reasons then just use lots of vaseline.

Ignore all these rude people. Ask the doctor for some liquid lidocaine. Trust me, put that on there, he won't feel a thing. I had an ulcer in a VERY delicate spot. My gyno prescribed, lidocaine for me, and I could've stabbed myself and not felt it. The reason I say liquid is because you just drip it on, and the gel is thick, and you have to rub it in to get it to take effect. The poor thing's already gonna be hurting.
Also, try letting him run around in a long t-shirt of his daddy's, no underwear. He's only three. It's not like anyone's gonna be looking!!
Also, keep one of those refreezable ice packs handy. And Dermoplast spray, if the doctor okays it.
Don't worry about him fathering children. I have 2 daughters by a circumcised man, and a daughter from an un-circumcised man. Men can father babies either way!!

I am surprised by all the negative attitudes to this question! You have explained clearly why you're doing it but you're still being abused! My first husband had to be circumcised as an adult. It's not something he chose to do but it was very much on the advice of doctors or other problems would be created. Had it been something that could have been seen to in the early years I am sure he'd have preferred it when he wasn't having erections etc, and having to deal with that kind of pain - quite a high pain factor! As for the person who said why not just sew up females - WHAT???!!! Did you mention he was getting his whole penis cut off???? I either missed that bit or the person is just bit a little bit silly about the whole thing, doesn't have an arguement against it and just needs to say something regardless.
I hope that whatever problem your son is having is cleared up with the op and I know he will grow up thanking you for getting it seen to in the early years rather than leaving it to adulthood when other problems far worse could have developed. Kids heal that much faster too and their minds are far more easily distracted so although he will obviously have some pain I do believe it'll pass for him far quicker.
As for the question - I don't know! But I am sure the doc will provide everything the wee man needs.
And why do a few think it's going to leave him unable to have children?? You are going to leave his testicles, aren't you????? I was always led to believe that that is where the sperm came from, but willing to be corrected.
Sorry for the rant but some of the above people have just really annoyed me!
And it was 'sew up our daughters' - just to get the quote right!

I have a son who had a circumcision 2 days after birth but you need to put vaseline on the part that was cirsumcised-that is what the hospital advised me to do.Keep putting it on a few times a day until the area is healed.

there seems to be some very immature answers on here i think that yahoo need to examine these people I'm sure yahoo have an investigation team and hopefully they will sort out these individuals .....
get your boy down the doctors and ask for the child to see an UROLOGIST all will be well when the medical professionals sort out the problem ...also type in this word- UROLOGY- and this might give you some advice...(understanding parent) :) ps don't give your child any of the medications advised on here ONLY FROM YOUR DOCTER (phew!)

It is a lot more painful as they get older. she just needs to comfort him...lots of tlc. Make sure that she has childrens tylenol at hand. You also need vaselind for the end of the penis while it is healing. This is a good example of why people should get it done while they are babies. My cousin had to have it done when he was 6.

Leave him. I have watched this procedure done and it's tramatizing for infants, children and adults alike.
And regardless of what some people claim some infants that have it done at less than a week remember this procedure. A four year old will remember. It may put him off sex later on, and if he is potty trained he probably won't be anymore. Do you want to go through that again? Just teach him how to keep it clean. It's becoming more and more common not to have it done, that's why most insurances don't cover it anymore. If you want to get your new baby done it's one thing, the chances of him remembering are slim, but there are cases. But your four year old, please don't do that to him. He doesn't deserve to have what is supposed to be private and sensitive to be pealed like a ripe banana. And believe me that is what it looks like but I'm sure it hurts a hell of a lot more.
