I care; I don't see why most don't. I think the best we can do is inform others about the consequences. There have been a couple movies that came out recently that discuss this issue. One is "An Inconvinient Truth" (out on dvd) and the other is "Who Killed the Electric Car?" (just left theaters a few weeks ago). You, or anyone else who feels that the environment should be saved, could also contact Congress or send letters to them asking that more laws be passed to help save our planet. Also, voting for people during election time who are committed to this issue is a good idea. And if you can't do these things, just do the little things like recycling, volunteering to pick up trash at parks and schools, planting trees, don't liter, walk more and drive less, and not buying products that pollute the air in factories can also help. In addition to that last statement, write up petitions and letters to these companies to stop polluting the earth and use the resources better.

Right now, as a chemical engineering student, I myself am working on a project that will bring us new sources of plastics... from corn. At the same time, hundreds, if not thousands, of scientists are in fact working on a number of major environmental problems day and night. Not only that, two of the world's biggest oil companies, Chevron and BP, are both pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into alternative fuel and carbon-free fuel research (aka wind, solar, and hydrogen for C-free, ethanol and oil sands for alternative).
The fact of the matter is, a lot of the alternative fuel initiatives that were started 10, 20, or 30 years ago are in fact still at work, and as a researcher I can say from personal experience that we are seeing exciting new developments every day! However, the reason you are not hearing about this is because mass media seems to have a much stronger interest in covering Iraq, Iran, and the "terrorists" than it does in covering cellulosic ethanol research, among other things.
In other words, just because the news isn't saying it doesn't mean it isn't happening. As far as "ideas" go, perhaps you could go online and learn how to make your own biodiesel, which can be used to run a diesel engine (but without using petroleum-based fuel). Here are a few sources to get you started:

Well, brilliant children, if I didn't like the way you took care of your property, BUT it was against the law for me to go onto your property what would you expect me to do?
That's essentially what the situation is. The rain forest are the property of the countries where the rain forest are. They are more concerned with bringing money to their country than saving what, to them is nothing-plants/animals, etc.
We may weep and moan, but the fact remains---it's their rain forest to do with as they please. I mean it's, like, soo not nice, huh.

Some people care about the enviroment but let's face it some people really don't care about it , and that's really sad we are talking about the place where WE live and many animals live too. People should learn to keep clean our enviroment and we should do something to make people think about this problem... I DO care about enviroment...
