Homelessness can be from an outside factor, not fault of the person, that the mental illness grabs hold because of the stress.
Mental illness is very prevalent among the homeless as well as among those in our jail system. It is the most difficult of illnesses to diagnose and treat.
But as one of your answerer's said - it's a toss up; both can bring about the other. My beau became depressed from the loss of his marriage, loss of new girlfriend, and quit his job. Then he became homeless because it was too much for him. He did that for 6 months in downtown New York. Very scary, but some angel looked after him, because he survived from cashing in cans for cash.
Have compassion for those who have either condition. Befriend them and help where you can. Neither are by choice.

Back in the 1960s, liberals and the ACLU set free many mentality ill people that were in hospitals, with the hope that they would attend meetings and stay in half-way houses. This did not happen and many of the mentally ill became homeless.
Unfortunately, there was no going back.
Many mentally ill people that can not afford medicine wind up on the streets. Especially schizophrenics and bipolar patients. It is sad. Only when they wind up in prison do they get the help they need. And even then, the help is lacking.
I would say that severe mental illness proceeds homelessness.
But if you wind up homeless for other reasons than mental illness, you are apt to become mentally ill because of the stress of living on the streets...most likely you are likely to become severely depressed.

there are two types of mental illness. organic and psychological. typical organic illness are usually schizophrenia, bi polar, clinical depression which means u have a psychical condition, that causes you to be mentally ill. you can not get a organic illness from being homeless. you however can get a psychological mental illness, from being homeless. depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation etc. a lot of people you see on the streets, that are homeless are patients from psychiatric hospitals, that either refuse medications, and housing, or they fallen between the cracks, or lack of housing and followup. mental illness probably probably would come first because it affects all kinds of people rich and poor. being depressed, hopeless, apathetic, does not mean a homeless person is mentally ill. these are normal emotions for the situations they are in. every body should be treated the same, and homeless people need the help that they deserve

If your askin this question concerning housing with the council then it is mental illness - trust me im in a similar position. The council would rush to help you if you had a mental illness or were claimin all the benefits going! I will be homeless soon and the council are in no rush to help me and i have a child!
I also know this cos i asked them myself!

Depends on what you mean.. Like housing or something, if it is housing i would say homelessness as a person who has experienced both i have been in a hostel for 2 1/2 years and been on the housing list for this amount of time. The quickest I've seen someone getting a house is if they are pregnent.

More than 25% of Americans are two paychecks away from homelessness. Katrina created man.....It can happen to anyone.
The most horrid experience I have had. It can definitely create mental illness when hope is loss.

Chicken and egg question? not really: It would be nice if I kenw your age and family consolation (your background) and your sex.
The answer is: mental illness comes first in most cases, but if a person is homeless - that situation can cause acute mental health conditions in addition to the ever present dangers of drug/alcohol addiction and the undesireable deviant elements which you will encounter on the streets.
