The theory is you will get the cash and the cops will be notified. My thing is how much good will it do, as ATM transactions only take seconds and you and the theif will be long gone.

I've never heard of that ... but the ATM's do have cameras, so as soon as that happens, YOU should notify the cops.

When I was a kid, someone told me to do this: - Sharpen a pencil. Collect the wood chips from that. Put these in a bowl full of milk. Leave it there. After few days, these wood chips will be converted to an eraser! Funny? Well, each and every student in my class (including me) believed it and tried it. Same holds true here. Try it and you will know that it is just a joke. As someone pointed out above, what if the PIN is same both ways? Like mine is 8998 Someone above mentioned that he tried 112 in an elevator and the phone dialed the number and displayed “emergency call”. Well, you should have read it carefully, it said “emergency calls only”. What it means is that there is no phone signal but you can use it to make emergency calls. Like making 911 calls.

This is utterly stupid. If you enter the wrong PIN number, you will Not get any money, nor will the police be notified. ATM's are NOT, I repeat NOT police call boxes.

I'm not sure who told you that or where you heard it, but it's ridiculous. The cops would be called everytime someone had a pin that was the same forwards and backwards!
EX:
1001
2002
3003
4004
5005
etc...

No, that is only a feature that home or office security companies offer like ADT. It is a silent signal for hold up that is sent to them then they call the police to your residence or work.
