Wikipedia has an excellent article about it that explains it all, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athiest.

I was also told I was an atheist by people, but never felt like thats what I was. Turns out by definition I am a spiritual agnostic. To find out if you might be better described as agnostic go here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostic

An Atheist denies the existence of a higher power. This is not to be confused with an Agnostic, who does not feel that evidence supports the existence of a higher power, but does not rule out the possibility.

"Atheist" is the opposite of "theist". A "theist" believes in one supreme being of some kind (not necessarily "God", per se, but the Christian God, Allah, the idea of "Lady Luck" or "karma" as a sentient entity, or "The Force" in Star Wars, etc. - any of these do qualify). The opposite, an "atheist", believes there is no supreme being of any kind.

Yes, that's the WHOLE answer. Don't believe any other add-on BS about them being good or evil, heathens, Satan-worshippers or anything else. It just means they believe there isn't one. Period.

If you yourself do not feel like an atheist then you are not. Just because you might or might not have questions about God and religion, does not make you an atheist. Most of us have questions, including me, and I do not consider myself an atheist.

An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in God. That is the complete definition. If you believe in God you are not an atheist, also if you don't believe in a religion.

Atheism is not a religion or ethical system. It has these two main definitions:
Atheists are generally self described as someone who does not have any belief about a god... they are indifferent.
Atheists are described by outsiders as someone who denies that a deity exists.

Yeah, that you don't believe in God/a god, but it's more often misrepresented as a person with no religious beliefs. I believe in the existence of some creative entity, because we're all here and stuff, but I refuse to buy into religions because I don't believe in a god that requires worship - I don't think that a god who created EVERYTHING would be that bothered whether or not humans idolise [him]. Does that help?

A athiest is a normal person, who does not believe in a particular type of God. They probably assume that because, maybe you don't go to any type of church or you've said you don't believe in God. But athiest still go about the mormal celebrations, such a s birthday's, weddings, so forth.
