High circulating levels of iron or gingival (gum) disease with associated bleeding can cause a metallic taste in the mouth. There are a host of medicines that can cause a metallic taste in your mouth, antibiotics being among the more notorious. If he has been on antibiotics lately, that can be a cause. He can also look through the package insert on any medications he takes to see if this is a listed side effect.
Usually the presenting symptoms of kidney disease don't include a metallic taste. However, if he is dialysis dependent, this could be associated with his dialysis and he might want to discuss it with his nephrologist.

If he is taking antibiotics for the kidney problem. A metallic taste in the mouth is pretty common. Also some other drugs that are used in treating kidney stones can cause the same affect.
Other than that its not usually related to anything serious.
Really good oral hygiene is important and will help. Making sure to brush floss and scrape the tongue (you can get a tongue scraper at the dentist or in most drug stores) If it is a serious concern with your husband or you.Call your doctor.

I think it has to do more with an oral/dental problem than a medical condition (i am not a doctor) if he has old filings they were made with metal with the saliva this creates this metallic-like taste. Have him visit his dentist. Happy holidays!
