I'm flying in from New York to Sydney on Cathay Pacific and then going on Virgin Blue to Cairns and need to know if there is an interline agreement between those two carriers.

There is not one between Cathay and Virgin Blue - if you are not fussed to fly with Cathay and would go with Malaysian Airlines they have a new interline agreement (a month or two old now?). I believe MH is DJ's only interline agreement but here there are more in the works. As Cathay and Qantas are oneworld members, you would have much better luck with getting your bags checked all the way through if you flew QF up to Cairns. You'd also get Asia Miles points for the SYD-CNS flight.

no they ahave no associations with any of those clubs sorry.

they are pretty much a stand alone as an airline but generally have the cheapest fares bar none.

I think you will find qantas have an interline agreement with cathay, but expect to pay more for the flight to cairns
