"Amy H" : Good answer, but sprituality is not religion

2006-12-06 07:44:43 · update #5

Those saying things like "people have a natural tendency to believe in a higher power" - I disagree, religious beliefs are born out of ignorance, which is why less people are taking it up, because the religous beliefs/"facts" are being shown as falsehoods...

Sprituality is something different to religion.

Yes I am an atheist, and yes I have a loathing of MOST things religious. Peaceful religion that is practiced by an individual I can just about deal with, even if I dont accept - if a buddhist wants to sit there chanting away to himself and it makes him happy then more power to him.

What I loathe, and have to do my utmost to ridicule is organised religion, and the individuals therein.

For these people and organisations, the organisation and perpetuation of it, has become more important than the essence of its supposed core.

Also, the blind rantings of Christians and Muslims alike, done in the name of their religion - quoting there various books and "prophets" enrage me, because it seems more important for them to try and convince everyone else that beliefs are true - now whilst I realise that I too am guilty of this, I do not accept the foundations of our rantings are equal. ie. my rantings are based on science, theres on..

2006-12-06 12:52:32 · update #7

..myth. The quotes from the Bible/Koran and nature of their rantings insult peoples intelligence and are so ridiculous that one can little more than pour ridicule on them.

The indoctrination (and essentially abuse) of innocent children with religious ideologies and dogma sicken me to the pit of my stomach - not so long ago, my niece started quoting stories about Jesus.. I cant tell you the rage I felt to hear the pure mind of my beautiful niece muddied with religious nonsense.

The bottom line is this, I deal in logic, reason and observations. Religion and worship are based upon ignorance, indoctrination and tradition. It absolves parts of human kind of a sense of responsibility, and endless crimes are committed under the umbrella of religion.

I simply cannot tolerate illogical, unreasoned behaviour. Worship is the most extreme example of this. The fact that it still plays a part in our society grates on me.

This is why I post these questions - to highlight the sillyness..

not many, maybe 1 or 2. i believe you are correct, children should not be pressurized into accepting a particular methodology/ideology, however they do need to understand the basic moral principles of any society/culture (ie not to steal/kill/swear/lie/fight).
i do not believe that there many religious people out there. most of my friends do not even know or have ever read the bible/koran/vedas/bhagavad gita. an individual is influenced by his environment/ upbringing/ family life/ lifestyle/ external influences eg tv music. and thus these influence the individuals indeologies/beliefs on life/god/religion. if he/she's parents were pornstars or rockstar satanists, do you expect them to ever support a religion or have any affinity for god or a higher being...i doubt so.

are you an athiest and why so? what religion did you follow before if so? i have observed your previous questions, it seems you have a distinct hatred of all things religious. thus i presume you may have knowledge of many or most religions and thus have come to this particular conclusion of becoing an athiest.
what has made you come to this conclusion. do you believe in a god.... or a minute possibility that there is a god. i would appreciate it greatly if you answered :)

It never would. While I agree some are indoctrinated/brainwashed and so on, humans have a natural tendency to believe in a higher power. It doesn't always show up in terms of a God; sometimes it shows up in patriotism, or belonging to a large group of some kind. But humans always want to be part of something larger, to matter to something higher.

Even if you tried to get rid of the idea of God, eventually it would spring up again. Smash it down and soon it will reappear again. Patriotism will show up again no matter what; any idea that gives humans the idea that they are part of something bigger will eventually spring up again.

And who knows but that there is actually a God out there who makes sure that His supporters will survive or will be brought back to life at some time in the future. You may disagree, I may agree; but neither of us will be certain until God restores what He meant for us to live in or we prove beyond a shadow of a doubt (which considering the vastness of space and where He could be found, will never happen in our lifetime or for probably centuries to come) that God doesn't exist.

As a Christan I like all the different views. I agree but I don't agree. My grandson is so pro Yankee, he wouldn't go to Boston with out a fight. That was because of his dad. I don't think it is brainwashing because you still have a choice. Whether it is Christianity, sports, music, boy scouts, girl scouts, or your home high school game. You choose to follow these things. Buy the way we were going to Boston to Quincy Market, and the aquarium.( NO, Red Sox)

One thing that you need to realize is that it's nearly impossible to grow up without being indoctrinated with something. Whether it be the lie that meaningless sex and monitary gain lead to happiness, or that God created the heavens and the earth, or that man evolved from a single-celled organism. Whether your source is your parents, or television, or a classroom, everyone is going to try to push their own beliefs on you. It's important not only to consider their motivation for doing so, but to step back and think about what you yourself believe and why. Personally, I believe that the bible is the word of God, and it's been my guidebook for years. I do share this belief with others, but i'm not trying to brainwash anyone. I think that it is my duty to God to try to open the eyes of those who've already been brainwashed by society.

No, otherwise where will it end? I don't like the way you bring up your child therefore I'm going to campaign against it until I MAKE YOU you do things MY way? *EDIT* Well boo hoo for you! So you didn't get taught the periodic tables! OMW! Lots of CHILDREN around the globe DON'T GET ANY FORMAL EDUCATION AT ALL! They're too busy WORKING instead of PLAYING from dusk till dawn to give YOU cheap food and clothes - that's REAL child abuse.

Probably forever. Religion in one way or another has been around forever and in all cultures and parts of the world. They all have similar characteristics. So the so called brainwashing that you are talking about does not really hold up when looking at it on a sociological perspective.

The same thing would have to occur when it comes to government, and education, or it wouldn't matter. They'd still be brainwashed. Public schools, and government, have been dumbing down kids for over 50 years.

they would just make up thier own religion. children have great imaginations, and believe in impossibilities and the unknown. Add to that a human desire to form rituals and to be part of a group, and you'd have a whole bunch of new religions running around.

You mean if they were brainwashed and indoctrinated into secularism? Probably not very long.
Edit: I agree that it isn't a cult, but propegating the belief of a Godless world sure would take some indoctrination since it doesn't apply to common sense.

Maybe just one, if the concept of religion was never introduced to them. I believe there will always be people who believe in a higher power or source of light, spiritualists in concept, but religion itself only exists because of indoctrination.
