I read in the New England Journal of Medicine a cup or two a day is good for your heart...so I take it that it's good in moderation...

PS the journal is written by doctors...

Well, it's all an issue of quantity. The drug in coffee is caffeine and too much is definitely bad for you and can be a contributing factor in high blood pressure, insomnia and even arrhythmia (granted, the medical consensus is that caffeine induced arrhythmia is rare and seen only in ridiculously high doses -- but with many "energy" drinks and caffeine powders and pills, it's worth mentioning). Additionally, lipids found in unfiltered coffee can raise serum cholesterol levels.

More common effects of caffeine are are nervousness or "the jitters," insomnia (also listed above), heartburn, reflux and is addictive. Caffeine is also a diuretic which means it causes your body to lose water and if you only drink caffeinated beverages, you could be not only becoming dehydrated but lose potassium through frequent urination.

Pregnant and nursing mothers are warned to avoid large quantities of caffeine though many feel small amounts are safe.

Coffee itself can also stain your teeth, cause flatulence and lose bowels.

Going off caffeine, like with other addictive substances, will cause withdrawal symptoms. This can include nausea, headaches, moodiness, muscle soreness and non-clinical depression.

Some research also shows that caffeine consumption by children may have adverse effects on normal neural development including problems with attention span.

However, this being said, modest consumption is safe for most adults and late adolescents.

1-2 cups every day is actually quite good for you. The only real downside is that even in moderation you build up a dependency on coffee so if you quit or have to do without for a few days, it can be painful.

Drinking coffee every day is bad for you because of the caffeine and staining of the teeth. High doses of caffeine can give women small lumps in the breast as well. As with anything else, moderation is the key.

I hope not. My Tenessee Granny gave me my first cup when I was four years old. When you sat at her table everyone was served a cup of coffee. I drank it with cream and lots of sugar. Every one told me if I kept drinking it my knees would turn black.

When I was about twenty years old I started drinking it black. Since that time I have had two cups in the am and two cups in the evening. I'm seventy one years old and still waiting for my knees to turn black.

Well I am not dead yet, and I drink about 3 cups a day and have for the last 30 years.

It can be if you begin to get addicted to it... I know my mum went on a detox and gave up tea, for days she had a headache :S

It can stain your teeth as well, although I think I have read somewhere, that like red wine it is ok in small amounts??

On the contrary, it helps in digestion and is good for the heart. That's one to two cups a day. More than three cups can be dangerous.

i dont think so.
although it stains your teeth really bad and turns them brown.
i know someone who had to use crest whitestrips to whiten her teeth because of coffee and even then her teeth were not too white.
