when tyson met lewis he was half the fighter he used to be.hand and foot speed was gone and was overweight.fact is tyson only needed to find one shot and lewis was out holyfield and bowe had a greater chance of beating a prime tyson than lewis did,coz they could both take a shot far better than lennox.mike was a far more ruthless finisher than mcall and rahman.

This is a difficult question to answer. I have probably seen just about all of Tysons fights and the majority of Lewis's. I used to be a huge Tyson fan. I firmly believe that had he fought Evander prior to going to prison, prior to Cus passing on he would have destroyed him. However where Lewis is concerned
Tyson had difficulty with taller bigger fighters
He went the distance with Bonecrusher Smith and Terrible Tony tucker. Even though he landed the better more devastating punches both fighters were able to nuetralize him somewhat.
Also if you remember another big tall fighter Razor Ruddock gave him all he could handle until Tyson caught him in the 11th with some devastating shots. I think the only way Tyson would have been able to beat Lewis if he was able to get inside. Which he may or may not have been able to do. Lewis and Tyson sparred in Catskills when they were both amatuers training for the olympics and from what I read Lewis got the best of Tyson.
Cus seemed to really inspire Tyson. For this reason I say Tyson catches him just like Oliver Mccall did and the Rock did. Tyson used to have great head movement and side to side lateral movement. He used to mythodically set fighters up for the fall. He also had blazing speed something he noticeably lost when he did fight Lewis years later. Even if he didnt knock Lewis out he would have won the bout the same way he was able to beat the three fighters I mentioned. He just would have landed the better shots. The main reason Tyson was knocked out by Lewis other than the fact that he should have never fought him. he needed way more training. He needed to find the eye of the tiger he used to have, was because he stood right in front of him like a sacrificial lamb waiting to slaughtered. The old Tyson would have moved his head moved his body and his feet and would have thrown punches with so much more fury with so much more velocity. He was a broken fighter when he fought Lewis. I still think had Tyson not have been cut from the so called accidental head butt he would have beaten Evander in both fights. Not to get off the subject, if you look closely before he bit Evanders ear and then bit his other ear after getting a warning Tyson was landing the more telling blows. He just didnt like the fact he was cut from a butt again and he snapped. I wish to God he would have just finished that fight. I think He would have knocked Evander out or the fight would have went to the score cards after 4 rds and Tyson may have won a close decision.
Either way I say Tyson would have won if he fought Lewis in his prime.

I don;t think Lewis' chin is as fragile as you make out. He was only stopped twice in his career and avenged both defeats, retiring beating every man he fought. I also think that this would not have been an easy fight for Tyson. Lewis did have a tendency to get lazy in some of his fights and a prime Tyson is the wrong man to do this with. Imo this would probably be a win for Tyson in the later rounds by stoppage. Lewis had good skills but Tyson was a pressure fighter with tremendous power and stamina, this eventually making Tyson victorious.

Let's get one thing out of the way. No excuses. Both of these fighters were beaten in their primes. So any statement to the effect of "there's no way_____ ______ would lose" is b.s. Mike Tyson 1988 vs. Lennox Lewis 1998. Lennox had a better chin than he is given credit for. But the fact remains that he was knocked out twice on one punch. A powerful right hand shot to the chin. When he got knocked down, Lewis did not get up. Tyson could absorb a lot of punishment. Other than the balance knock down he suffered against Holyfield, he needed to get beat down before getting knocked down. I see a 1988 Tyson being too fast for Lewis to land blow after blow. But I see 1998 Lewis being extremely cautious so as to not allow even a 1988 Tyson the opportunity to land one on his chin. If I had to say in my less than expert opinion, I'd give Lewis the win by decision. I'll say 53 times out of 100 Lewis will win the matchup, 45 times out of 100 Tyson wins the matchup, and the remaining two times are draws.

Tyson did not have Frazier's will or heart

They fought previously but not in their primes. Several questions are to be answers. Will Tyson's style be made for Lewis (like Frazier and Foreman)? What Lewis will show up (I hope not the one that fought McCall or Rahman)? Did Lewis have a weak chin or a lack of focus? What will prevail Tyson's power and ferocity or Lewis' ring generalship and power?
Even though I am the "Bible of boxing", I can't tell you who in the hell will win. I am not concerned that I can't decide.

Tyson was exposed by Buster Douglas as a decent kid with fast hands, power, lots of anger but not the discipline needed to be a "great" boxer.
Although Lewis had some ups and downs, he did have the discipline, excellent power, size, a super jab...on the right night, Lewis would have cut Tyson to ribbons. He might have Kayoed him. Definitely would have sent him to canvass a few times (Tyson didn't have a iron chin himself). All things equal, I'd go with Lewis! Bigger, stronger, more crafty and disciplined, with a huge reach advantage..
Lewis was a powerful boxer/puncher. Tyson, a more skillful than your average bully, but a bully nonetheless. Tyson would get frustrated by Lewis's jab, blow it. And then, Lewis would pounce!

Lennox was one of the few fighters that had all the right attributes and style to beat a prime Tyson. Start with his reach, because it was so long even a skilled infighter like Tyson couldn't easily move in. Add in the power and speed and it becomes even more difficult to work inside. Tyson wasn't tall at all so he would be at more of a disadvantage then when he fought the typical heavyweight. If Tyson could work his way in and stay on the inside he would win but I just don't see it happening. Lennox would always outbox and use his size to beat Tyson.

JOE Buckley - when Cus D'amato was still alive Lewis and Tyson sparred as amatuers. D'amato stopped the sparring because Lewis was giving him a good going over, and embarrassing Tyson. Food for thought. Lewis became a title belt holder in '89. Why did Tyson not fight him then?

Lewis's tendency to get lazy during some fights would hurt him, especially if Tyson properly trained. If Lewis had Manny Steward as his trainer for the fight, he'd have a shot. But he'd need to grab practically every time Tyson got inside and he'd need to keep jabbing all fight long to have a shot.
