I have a 96 Ford Explorer. Sometimes at start, the 4 wheel hi and lo lights will blink 6 times. When that happens power windows do not work, nor will engage in 4 wheel drive. It is intermittent, it might last 2 seconds, or a month. It may happen at any moment. I have checked all fuses, all ok. Does not affect drive performance. Any logical suggestions would be appreciated.

There is a code in the GEM (General Electronic Module) and very few high-end scantools can see them. The control unit is seeing something it doesn't like and it's a common problem with these vehicles. My neighbor is experiencing the same thing with his 02 Explorer and the 6 blinks. I'm waiting for my NGS (New Generation Star) XL Tester, made by Hickok for Ford techs, to arrive for this very reason. You will have to bring it to a shop with an OEM or powerful scantool to see the GEM Code. There are about 38 pins between the 2 connectors to the module and there would be no efficient way to test for what it is not seeing. The most common problems are the 2 hall speed sensors on the transfer case (Auto AWD unit), but you would be playing the guessing game at best. Bring it to a shop and ask them if they have the ability to read GEM codes, which is not in the ECM. I believe Snap-on scantools can.

The psychic mechanic thinks that It is a sign you should look up in the owners Manuel, or that blinking lights is just right for this time of year, Probably means service is needed in the transmission department or you got some water on the brains of the machine.

You may need a scan tool to get the diagnostic codes (dtcs) for 4x4 sys. If no access to a scan tool, check the electrical wiring for damage and the terminals on the connectors at the 4x4 and window switches for push out for other damage, etc.
