As an "old fart" and a college student, I just can't believe the questions that are popping up here in the last few days! How is it possible that one can get to h.s., nix that--even out of fifth grade, and NOT know the two sides in the civil war, that capitals of all states, and what the constitution is?! For 20 yrs, I have worked in the DCD/LD departments of public schools and my fourth graders could answer these!

Wow, I'm really feeling old now! My kids had to "earn" tv tokens by doing chores and the tokens could only be cashed in on non-school nights. Sun-Thurday were reserved strictly for academic, reading, family and scouting. Guess that's why my daughter was reading chapter books in first grade!

Hmmmm, an additional scary thought. One day, these empty headed fools will procreate! This is truly worrisome. Suppose McD's will be happy to have an unlimited supply of cheap, undereducated workers.

Don't blame public education -- blame parents who are too wrapped up in their own lives and too busy keeping up with the Joneses to educate their children and make sure they're doing their homework, and blame the children who would rather watch TV and play X-Box all day than learn, and who are also more interested in who will become the next American Idol than what's going on in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I don't know where you are but here in our state they are presently putting most of the $ that we the tax payers give for things like big gyms PE programs, health education, teachers lounges, large buildings for the "control centers, bomb shelters, play grounds, interior decorations, Out side building "improvements ect. But when you drop in the majority of the class rooms have very little control. They've got kids running around all over the room & their gades are awful . They spend large amount of time in the extra ativities.
Twenty years ago the schools were even worse they passed the kids on even if they couldnt read.
Im now a grand parent & Id like to know where there might be a sight to see "report Cards " on these schools.

I agree with you. Have you noticed all the questions about thow to circumvent district blocks to get to sites like myspace? That is what they are doing in school. I make sure my kids know what is going on by asking them what they are studying and questioning them about facts. We are messed up when some of these kids take over the world and run our lives.

I have two Ivy League degrees in my recent past, and I couldn't name all the state capitals (probably just 30 or 40). But the other two are outrageous.

wait, there was a civil war? just kidding. what a dumb name. what is so civil about any war? brother against brother. does not make any sense to me. and the sad part is, it was the US vs the US.
