All the camcorders will link up easily to TV, but if your father in-law also want to edit the videos on a computer - a mini DV camcorder is probably the best option.

As far as brands go, you can never go wrong buying Sony for video. I strongly recommend buying a MiniDV format camcorder. DVD camcorders are one of the most frequently returned piece of electronics because no one can figure out how to use them and they are not very reliable. I'm not keen of the hard disk drive units either; too many problems loading to the PC, etc. People think in tape terms and MiniDV fits the bill.

It shouldnt matter too much. One around the $200- $400 price range should be good enough. Get a miniDV camcorder, for his purposes, it would be better than a DVD cam. All of them can hook up to a tv so dont worry about that. Theres really not much thinking involved. Most consumer cams are pretty much identical to each other. (Most, but not all). Hope this helps!

Get one that has the features that you want and is easy to operate. All are about the same, just pick the one you like.
