Please don't laugh at me. I recently visited NYC for the day and absolutly fell in love. I loved the enegry of the city and all the different people. I could go on and on. So when I was leaving I was thinking about my day and one question came to mind...where does everyone do their grocery shopping? I know like everyone else, but where are these hidden grocery stores at? I spent my day in the lower Manhattan, just in case anyone was curious where I was.

They aren't typically that easy to pick out as many have entrances under scaffolding or on side streets. However, there are plenty especially in busier residential areas. You aren't going to find too many Grocery stores down by Wall St/WTC, in Times Square, and the other touristy areas. But when you get to the neighborhoods, you should be able to find them every couples of blocks, along with corner deli's that sell the necessities.

In my area, I have two Food Emporiums, including one under the 59th st. Bridge and a Gristedes that I shop at. If I'm just getting drinks or something random or small, I'll stop at the drug store or a corner deli.

I don't think too many people from out of town recognize the grocery stores when they see them anyhow.

Before I lived in NYC I never noticed them either when I went to visit. The larger ones definitely aren't as large as the mega supermarkets you see in the suburbs. It's possible to walk around and not pass one since they are not as common as delis or smaller specialty stores. I don't know where in lower Manhattan you were but there is an Associated on 14th St. between 1st Ave and Ave A. There's also a Key Food on Ave A, between E. 3rd and E. 4th St. C-Town is another big one in NYC. The three I named are generally less expensive than a number of other NYC grocery chains.

Don't know about Walmart [try checking their website]. But there are grocery stores all over NYC. Most are pretty small, at least by suburban standards.

Every corner has a deli or a market of some sort. Specialty stores: Citarella, Balducci's, Zabar's, Eli's, Fairway, Whole Foods Market (the one at Union Square is pretty impressive), Agata & Valentina, Grace's Marketplace, Gourmet Garage and many others. Then you have the chains such as Gristedes and D'Agastinos, etc which are pretty lousy in my view. Of course, a lot of people buy from www.freshdirect.com too.

A trademark Manhattan grocery store is D'agostino's.........they are located all over Manhattan....also you'll see men on tricycles with a very large box in the front....they deliver the groceries to the residents who live there.....a very common practice is to call in your groceries and have them delivered. Anyone carrying a DAG BAG has done their grocerty shopping there. I lived on the upper east side and shopped there.......located around 78th, 79th & Lexington. But, they are all over the city.
ALso Gristedes is there too....and Whole Foods has been there for about 8 years or less.

Groceries aren't really hidden, but I suppose they're not obvious when you're new and not looking specifically for them.

Favorite= fairway on the upper west side at 74th and broadway.

Convenient and all over: food emporium, gristedes, wholefoods

There's a lot of smaller groceries and delis too.

There is a Whole Foods at 7th ave and 24th st. and also one at Columbus Circle. There are also grocery delivery services like Fresh Direct.
I know, there aren't alot of food stores but think of all the take-out places! :)
