If by NYC you mean Manhattan, they just changed the law. That trip costs $45 flat rate, same as Manhattan to JFK. This only applies to yellow cabs. A livery cab could charge you more or less. Agree on the rate before you get in the cab.

If you don't have much luggage, take the Airtrain to the subway
$5 + $2 = $7. A yellow cab is $45 + toll (about $5) + tip.

Do not take a yellow cab into the city (Manhattan). You'll end up spending your entire vacation budget just to get there! The are several reputable black car/limo companies that you can access online that will quote you a fair fare! But if you insist in waiting till you get to the airport check out this website first:

Good luck and have a great time in our wonderful city!!

You can take the AirTrain as well to the subway, which takes about the same time to get to midtown as a cab (depending on traffic of course).

Take the AirTrain from your terminal to Jamaica Station, where you can switch to the E train and it takes you through Queens back into Manhattan. AirTrain is $5 and the subway ride $2. However, you have to ride on a somewhat sketchy subway to the city.

Get the Manhattan Hotels bus. It was $10 but that was 16 years ago.

Take a shuttle, they're really cheap. Think its like $17 when I was there in april. You have to share with up to 8 other people so it can get a bit cosy, but at least it leaves you more dosh for spending!
