Because lord Krishna used to herd them.
besides, cows are cool. u should be jealous they're sacred. =P

thats the REAL reason why...heres what i found on the internet

The cow is so vital to life, the virtual sustainer of life for humans. In a society if you only had cows and no other domestic animals or agricultural pursuits, you could still survive and the children could survive with the butter, the cream and the milk to feed the children. The cow is a complete ecology, a gentle creature and a symbol of abundance.

I'm not Hindu but I thought to answer. Camels were sacred to Arabs in Arabia before Islam, the reason is obvious and that is it is impossible to live in the desert without camels so it is source of life i.e. wool to make clothes and tents milk transportation, it was the real assets. From the above I would assume cows for Hindus is like camels for ancient Arabs.

it's a part of hindu culture, the cow has been very helpful to civilization in that region, that's why they respect it, they don't wake up every morning to pray to the cow, as many people so illogically believe

because it is used to pull the carts and do all the labour a horse would do in the west (except riding them into battle and for pleasure)

I also know that durng the British-Indian curry cooking champoinships a few years ago, was that the British won, and the Indians asked us what we put in it (because they tasted it) and they went mad when they found out that it was beef!

because theyre damn cute.
they dont threaten other creatures...
they amble about without a care
as if they were enlightened.
ive no idea really,
but i dont like to see the cow maligned.
just because they havnt produced an albert einstein..theres no need to treat them with contempt.
...anyway einsteins ideas lead to the atom bomb so he wasnt such a good guy after all was he!!

All animals are sacred in Hinduism. It's because they believe in reincarnation. The cow represents prosperity because of it's "fattness" and because it is always eating.
