back in grandmas day, they kept a box of those big kitchen matches in the bathroom and lit one after taking a ..uh..#2
because the smell of the sulfer from the match covered up the smell of the real business (No one was fooled though)
to me it just smells like sh*t and sulfer
anyways...that was before air freshener was invented...and I've never heard of anyone doing it outside of the bathroom

Normally the ignition should be at the point of exit. This is very appropriate in public, as, this eliminates the offensive odor (Bic lighters work best). But, many people not care and want everyone to smell their stinking @ss (brown nosers want everyone to be like them) so they let in out quietly and blame someone else, which is improper etiquette.

The smell of the burning flint masks the odors of H2S (hydrogen sulfide) gas and CH3SH (methyl mercaptan) gas which are jointly responsible for the smell in "farts." Since these fumes are less repugnant, they are preferred to the foul smell of intestinal gas.

However I think lighting a match may draw more attention to the fact that you farted then the smell itself. Unless of course you rip a really rank one -- in that case, by all means, do what you can to spare the rest of us!!
