My 4 month old black lab had to be sedated in order to get skin samples around her eyes. She was tested for mites but was negative. Anyway, they had to sedate her for it because she's so energetic and does not sit still and the vet didn't want to poke her in the eye. She also had a broken nail and it had to be cut way down and she now has it wrapped. Since we got home she has aten, but she won't drink any water. She also won't lay down or sleep. She just whines and whines. She also has the runs and has been going all over the house. I can't get her just to relax and sleep it off. I've tried getting her to lay on her favorite blanket, but she won't lay. I've sat there rubbing her belly but she gets up shortly. I've tried so many other things and she won't relax and sleep. Any tips to get her to relax and sleep and any tips on how to care for her until she's back to her normal energetic self?

Do you have a crate to keep her in? That's probably the best place for her until the drugs have completely worn off.

A crate is like a den for dogs, it makes them feel secure, and shouldn't stress them out. She might whine for a little while, at first, but after a while she should calm down and sleep. Covering the crate with a blanket may help. The darkness might calm her down. Sometimes animals under sedation can become extra sensitive to light.

Right now your dog is very uncomfortable. It sounds like you are a compassionate person and truly want to help your dog. I would isolate her like in a kitchen or someplace that can be cleaned easily but unless she is used to it I would not crate her because it would add to her stress. I would try to get her to go outside if you live in a place that is nice out, the fresh air might relieve some nausea. If this has been taking place for more then 24 hours I would call your vet, she might of had a bad reaction to being sedated. I would also make a note of it incase they need to sedate her again, possibly they could use less or maybe a different kind or keep her at the vets house. I wouldn't feed her anything but keep on pushing fluids. For the runs give her half white rice and half lean hamburger after she hasn't eaten for about 12 hours. Just be patient.

At this same age, only my dads dog is a German Shepard, and when she came home she slept a lot, didn't do much eating or drinking, and usually she will drink a well dry! She got fixed, and then also at the same time has to have stitches put in her foot. But when it wore off around midnight - she woke up and you would never know anything was wrong with her!! It sounds like you might want to call the vet with all of these problems, you don't want something else to be wrong and not find out. Most vets I've talked with are more than happy to answer your questions. Good Luck!!

If the whining is not like her average every day self something is bothering her & it could be soreness from her procedures or just stress from it or it could be a reaction to the anesthesia. I would call the vet & report her actions. She may just have to let her body rid itself of the meds but at least the vet will have it on record what the consequences have been of her procedure.

Really all you can do is keep her in a confined place and be patient. Had a similar situation with my cat and just gave him extra re assuring attention. She'll come around soon. good luck
