The bible is clearly not compatible with evolution theory. It has nothing against fossils or carbon dating. There is a major problem with carbon dating, however, it is fataly flaws because it is based on an assumption. It is the same as saying I have a candle that I know for sure it 5 inches tall right now at the time of measurement and from watching it for the last hour I know burns at one inch per hour so based on this I can say that the candle has been burning for 12 hours. Obviously this is flawed math/logic. Carbon dating is based on the rate at which carbon-14 decays to determine the age of an object. The problem is that we don't know how much carbon-14 something started with, testers make an assumption AND it assumes a constant rate of decay over the last X number of years when both Christian Creation theory and Evolution Theory teach that the Earth's atmosphere has undergone cataclysmic change atleast once.

Carbon dating :
The amount of cosmic rays penetrating the earth’s atmosphere affects the amount of 14C produced and therefore dating the system. The amount of cosmic rays reaching the earth varies with the sun’s activity, and with the earth's passage through magnetic clouds as the solar system travels around the Milky Way galaxy.

The strength of the earth’s magnetic field affects the amount of cosmic rays entering the atmosphere. A stronger magnetic field deflects more cosmic rays away from the earth. Overall, the energy of the earth’s magnetic field has been decreasing,5 so more 14C is being produced now than in the past. This will make old things look older than they really are.

Also, the Genesis flood would have greatly upset the carbon balance. The flood buried a huge amount of carbon, which became coal, oil, etc., lowering the total 12C in the biosphere (including the atmosphere—plants regrowing after the flood absorb CO2, which is not replaced by the decay of the buried vegetation). Total 14C is also proportionately lowered at this time, but whereas no terrestrial process generates any more 12C, 14C is continually being produced, and at a rate which does not depend on carbon levels (it comes from nitrogen). Therefore, the 14C/12C ratio in plants/animals/the atmosphere before the flood had to be lower than what it is now.

fossils :
‘The true explanation of the fossil record is very clear, the only reasonable explanation for the fossil record, and the sedimentary formations in which they are found, is the great cataclysm of the Noachic Deluge.’ -Dr. Arlton C. Murray

evolution:
If the problem is not our sin but our animal nature, then we only need to wait for evolution to raise us to the next stage.

Very honestly I believe in a literal Genesis over the latest theory that will change with the next textbook to come along.

Surprisingly, there are many in Religion that believe in Evolution. It's just we see a lot more of the few who disagree with it. And only because they are LOUD about it.

Yes, there are some who honestly do not believe in any of those things. I was once told that all the Fossils were put there by Satan to deceive the world. *Sigh*

Ironically, the Greek and Roman "Myths" are still believed... to a degree! Definitely not in the same sense as Christianity believes in the Bible 100% Literally. But there are Pagans out there who do worship Zeus and Diana (There is a Dianic Tradition in Wicca). But even they will say the stories written about them are
Myth, stories to convey a certain message. But I think it's going to be a while before we see that happening to Christianity. They still have a lot of LOUD people who feel Freedom is only for them and everyone else is going to hell. *wink*

You asked several questions, so I will provide you with several answers:

"Can people who believe in religion also believe in things like carbon dating and evolution?"

People can believe in whatever they like--whether it makes sense or not.

"Does the bible contradict these things?"

I'm not sure I like the use of the word "contradict" there, but the bible does not support those things. In regards to carbon dating, the bible does not account for what existed before the earth was formed for man. However, there may have been something existing before that, but it is irrelevant to our existence. As for evolution, if we evolve it is by the same God that created us. If we do not, it is because the same God that created us chose not. I have never understood how we have so much time to try to figure out how the Creator created instead of being one with Him and accepting that the creation is created.

"How long will it take before religions like Christianity and Islam are viewed as Mythology like the religions of the ancient Greeks and Romans?"

Why do religions need to be viewed as anything? Isn't it better to live and let live?

People should be able to believe what they like whether others like it or not, or agree or disagree. It does not effect one's own personal beliefs. Everyone seems to want to be part of a "group", and when that doesn't happen, people seem to want to force others to join their group. Where's the strength of the belief?

Mythology is simply an outside opinion. Belief is reality to the individual who believes.

Peace!

I have never seen a bone or rock or tree or anything else with a stamp saying"I am 60,000,000 years old.

We assume a rock or bone to be a specific set of years????stupid then we categorize everything from something that could be a few thousand years old.

So now we are into speculations and theories and not true science at all.

Evolution is a theory not a science for in order for evolution to be a science it has not been proven so as it does not meet the criteia to be scientific prof. therefore it will always remain a theory not a science but part of a science projec

Before islam and christianity will ever be viewed by science or the population in general the rapture will take place and then Armageddon. So forget it.

Evolution: theory of man.

Bible: WORD of GOD.

Carbon dateing and fossils are all real things no matter what anybody says. Now evolution is the issue. I just can accept that millions of years ago we intelligent human beings started out as a cell, then turned into monkeys, and all of a sudden grew skin and became smart ok...smater than monkeys. Life is so delicate that our ecosystem had to be created perfectly of we would all not be here. If we were any closer to the sun we would burn up, if we were farther away we would freeze. The amazing mountians and oceans were made for us to enjoy. All these things are proof god is real. The Bible only contridicts evolution not carbon dating. Hope this helps.

the first 5 books of The Holy Bible were written with techniques from Moses as he and The Israelites were wandering the barren area for 40 years. i experience, thinking the excellent quantity of floor those books cover, and the non secular nature of them, not continuously direct and literal, that they are actual conceivable and only as precise as they favor to be as a fashion to introduce us all to the courting between God and mankind. yet a more advantageous direct answer for your question: Why do you think interior the Bible? Is: even as a believer hears or reads the hot testomony, there's a sympathetic resonance which earrings: "actual" interior the middle and ideas. it is the source of "faith". this is not plausible to believe the hot testomony without believing the former also. they're only like the criteria of interest on a rifle. previous = rear sight, New = the front sight. Line em up on the bullseye = salvation and pull the set off = faith. Have a good day.

I don't think the Bible contradicts those things if you don't take it literally.

Yes, some people honestly do not believe those things, and would believe the Earth was flat if they were told it in a religious context.

I already consider those religions mythology ;-)

However, some religions are not as closed-minded about science, like Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism, and paganism. Philosophy and Science are two different schools. Each has value, and they are compatible, because they ask different questions about different things. The problem comes when one starts to contradict the other... and if that's the case I think Science ought to win out. I'd rather adjust my philosophical views in light of new scientific information than try to bend science to the will of my opinion.

The Bible definitely contradicts these things. God created Adam & Eve and the Earth. People could definitely believe in both evolution and carbon dating if they believe in religion, but they would be contradicting themselves. Yes, there are people who do not believe in carbon dating/fossils/evolution. They are everywhere.

And I have a feeling that Christianity and Islam are going to be around for a long, long time.

Dr. Wiens has a PhD in Physics, with a minor in Geology is a Christian. His PhD thesis was on isotope ratios in meteorites, including surface exposure dating. He was employed at Caltech's Division of Geological & Planetary Sciences at the time of writing the first edition. He is presently employed in the Space & Atmospheric Sciences Group at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
check out the web site-very interesting.

First edition 1994; revised version 2002.

Radiometric dating--the process of determining the age of rocks from the decay of their radioactive elements--has been in widespread use for over half a century. There are over forty such techniques, each using a different radioactive element or a different way of measuring them. It has become increasingly clear that these radiometric dating techniques agree with each other and as a whole, present a coherent picture in which the Earth was created a very long time ago. Further evidence comes from the complete agreement between radiometric dates and other dating methods such as counting tree rings or glacier ice core layers. Many Christians have been led to distrust radiometric dating and are completely unaware of the great number of laboratory measurements that have shown these methods to be consistent. Many are also unaware that Bible-believing Christians are among those actively involved in radiometric dating.

This paper describes in relatively simple terms how a number of the dating techniques work, how accurately the half-lives of the radioactive elements and the rock dates themselves are known, and how dates are checked with one another. In the process the paper refutes a number of misconceptions prevalent among Christians today. This paper is available on the web via the American Scientific Affiliation and related sites to promote greater understanding and wisdom on this issue, particularly within the Christian community.
