Raven and P*Kitty are RIGHT. Just arrange the tree so the damage is minimal tie it up so it won't fall over. Hey man, your cat is part of your family so let him/her join the "family" tradition.

There are many possible solutions besides spraying your tree:
A) Put a barrier of some sort around your Christmass Tree to prevent your cat from making contact
B) I'm sure there are some kinds of materials they sell that repel cats (Liquids?) that you can use (NOT ON YOUR CAT). You could put it on your Christmas Tree or around it to prevent your cat from coming near.
C) (IF) You'r Christmas Tree is in a room that you dont use very much (that has a door) just close the door when no ones using it or when someones in it.
D) Keep watch and everytime you see your cat going near the Christmas Tree, carry him/her away.
E) Occupy your cat, you could get him/her a scratching post, a self automated toy, a remote controlled mouse (Yes they do sell those, I know for a fact ((I have one)) ).
F) This isnt exactly my best choice...Shut her up in a room with marbles and toys that she could play with, and someone to play with (I wouldnt though)
G) Get/Make something that would grab your cat's attention from the tree (You could take some boxes and make a play house or a tunnel of some sort, or buy a post or play pen)
H) Again, not the best choice, move you Christmas Tree to a basement or attic (Somewhere that you dont use) until (A couple days before?) Christmas Eve or Chrismas
I) If there are ornaments and other strings and catchy things on your Christmas tree remove them until Christmas Eve- You could have a family get-to-gether and hang them back up again
J) Punish your cat (Not harshly) everytime he jumps on your tree, spray it, flick it's nose, toss it (GENTLY) away, ect.

Cats hate the smell of oranges, so you can probably make some creative orange peel decorations or lay orange peels around the base of the tree. If that doesn’t work, lay large, unstable items around the tree, so that they cant jump into the branches. Also, always have a squirt bottle handy so you can spray your cat when she starts climbing. If all of that doesn’t work, get one of those small model trains that run around your Christmas tree. Cats hate electronic devices and even if the train is not on, the cats will learn to recognize it as something they don’t want to go near.

attempting to stop a cat from what comes obviously is somewhat a project. eliminating the temptation or adorns from the bottom of the tree ought to help slightly if he does not climb the tree. (yea accurate) you should attempt preserving the cat faraway from the tree once you're literally not there to visual show unit him. yet another room or blockading his get admission to to the tree till the tree comes down. Giving him some thing more advantageous exciting that he's permitted to take off the tree like catnip filled "adorns" ought to help some. (now unlikely) Cats are patently playful and hunters with some thing which will bypass or roll. you should attempt some plastic one for him to play with. good luck

Raven is right. Basically, you have to leave the house or go to sleep sometime. That is when the cat has its fun.
As an alternative, you could tie the ornaments to the tree with ribbon or invisible plastic fishing line. You can make the ornaments tighter that way and less likely to fall off when the cat hits them, and they won't be swinging like a toy. Anchor the tree with cord to some screw in hooks in the wall or ceiling. Heavy weight clear plastic fishing line works good for this, because you can't see it easily. That way the tree can't get knocked over. Use unbreakable ornaments, just in case the cat does knock them off, and don't use tinsel or garland. Extra wide twisted ribbon makes a really nice garland looking decoration and doesn't seem to attract cats as much. Remember to unplug the lights when you aren't near the tree, so the cat doesn't get fried.
Cats will be cats, and you can get really tense about trying to keep it away from the tree, or you can make the tree safe and relax. Happy Holidays!

Either don't put up a tree or put the tree somewhere you don't allow the cats to be.
Cats love to climb trees and nothing you do with stop them.

1) remove the tree (We haven't had one in years....)
2) put the tree in a room, to close the door and keep the cats out.
3) train the cats by sqirting them with water from a squirt gun or squirt bottle
4) purchase some preparation from the pet store that prevents cats from getting onto the tree (there are chemicals available at petstores which supposedly prevent cats from wanting to climb or get on areas) and spray accessible areas with this preparation
5) spray the accessible area of tree with some lemon juice, as cats reportedly don't like citrus
6) if the cats are climbing from the trunk up, cover the trunk in aluminum foil as cats reportedly don't like to claw through aluminum foil
7) purchase 'scat mats', place around the perimeter of tree, so they can't get close enough to it to climb
8) put 'soft paws' on their claws to prevent them from being able to climbing
