a Red Cross message will have to be sent. The family member back home must request that a message be sent via the red cross. You will need:
The name of the person ill/dying/deceased
the name of the doctor treating the patient
the relationship of the patient to the Servicemember
the Servicemember's Full name, rank and command address.
Th RC will then verify with the doctor that this is indeed seriosu enough to warrant a request for Emergency Leave. They will then contact the Command, who will then make a determination.
Be aware: the SM does NOT have to come home if they choose not to. The Command is under no obligation to grant emergency leave. It may take several days for everything to happen, as the RC is manned by volunteers and with time zone differences, it can tale a while to get a hold of all the right people. Emeregnecy leave counts against regular leave, and if deployed in the sandbox, could also be counted as their Mid tour R&R(depends on Command policy). Also, the sercimember would have to fund the return trip home themselves.

yes this is possible but there are certain protocols they MUST follow............the parents have their doctor contact the red cross and then the red cross will liaise with the family as well as the base where he is stationed.............BUT please a word of warning it depends on where the marine is stationed as to [a] how quickly he can get back, [b] IF he can get back [c] the MARINE will be paying for the trip, this is NOT a freebie via the military.....................they recalled my husband as I was very very very ill and suddenly not only was in a coma at the hospital with care for the kids being patchy at best but we had to find over $700.00 out of pocket for him to come back as well as the month he was home also came from his leave periods......so if the marine does not have the leave he will end up owing the military for this as well.

I have heard that yes, if the military is notified that a solider's immediate family member is gravely ill or dies then they will make sure that the soldier will be notified ASAP and the soldier will have the opportunity to go home to attend funerals or be with the person for a short period. However, I think that the time at home for family illness or death does not count toward their required period of time in the service since it is leave.

Some one mentioned emergency leave, but I don't know how likely that would be granted. I think the chances of getting pulled out of a combat zone are slim.

it's possible, it just depends on the circumctances. i've knew a guy that was able to go from active duty to reserve with over half his active duty time still left becuase he had to take care of his mother,...(which is just unheard of)
if your marine has a good reason his command will usually bend over backwards for him (i know it doesn't seem like it sometimes but it's true)

Yes, I think you can go to commanding officer and he will tell you the steps to take. I so sorry for your terrible problem, I wish you the best of everything.
