if they thought the anaemia was related to some sort of bowel problem

Yes, a person could be anemic if they are having intestinal bleeding from an ulcer or polyp, etc. So, in some cases, a doctor would order a colonoscopy if he or she thought there was bleeding in the intestines.

Any unexplained anemia can be evaluated with looking for a GI source of chronic blood loss. If a patient does not have, for example, chronic nosebleeds, heavy periods, blood donor or any outward sign of blood loss, then you go to look for a slow leak somewhere. The stomach is a common source, then the colon. It is easy to look into the stomach and colon to see if anything might be causing the bleeding. The anemia is usually described as microcytic(small cells) and hypochromic (low hemoglobin) This is an iron deficiency anemia, most usually from chronic blood loss.

Maybe the doctor wants to find out if you are bleeding internally, in your bowel.
He will also probably want to test you for colon cancer. He is only trying to rule things out so it narrows down his focus on you.
