actually challenged? Most of the handicapped people I see have someone pushing their wheelchair for them, getting there food for them, helping them eat, helping them up stairs, and doing most stuff for them. How can you be challenged when you just sit there letting everyone wait on you? I see a few people actually struggling to get around on their own but the majority of them I see let everyone else wait on them. Not much of a challenge.

When I think of someone being challenged I think of them going up against odds and succeeding, example climbing a mountain, surviving extreme cold, obstacles, not just not being able to do stuff for themselves, as there is no challenge to that.

They use the word "challenged" to mean "impaired" or "impeded." In other words if they are physically "challenged" that is saying they are physically incapable of doing something (i.e. walking, pushing their wheelchair, feeding themselves, etc.) so they require someone else to do it for them.
It's just another way that political correctness has distorted our language. People are just too sensitive and take things too hard. So we compensate by adjusting our language at the expense of being descriptive or specific. Thus we get such ambiguous labels as "challenged" and "alternative lifestyle" and "adult entertainment."
I personally think it's childish if not confusing. I have asperger's disorder (high functioning autism) but I don't care if you call me autistic. The condition is what it is, and calling it something different doesn't change anything. But don't get me started on political correctness, really. It frustrates the hell out of me in just about every respect.
-- Maria they use "challenged" in both aspects, mental and physical. But it applies the same definition to whichever aspect you use it with. You totally missed my point. And remember that "dumb" is only relative.

Are you serious?? How are they challenged??
Perhaps because all of the things you see people doing to help them are things that would be quite difficult or impossible for them to do on their own.
they are challenged to live in a world of people who misunderstand their abilities, who would park in their parking spots because " why do they deserve it ". They are challenged to learn how to get by without all the abilities that we have. (use of legs, arms, walking, sight, hearing) They may be helped sometimes but that doesn't lessen the challenge. People who climb mountains receive help. People who overcome huge obstacles rarely do everything alone.
I know physically challenged people who receive help when family is around but otherwise are left to cope on their own. This could be the case for many.
Having to rely on others for help is a challenge. Having to live in a world made for people who aren't physically challanged is difficult.(even though some store install ramps)

I have got a lot of friends that a physically challenged and they do everything by themselves. Even my own child is mentally challenged and he does a lot by himself. So people need to watch what they say to other people.

Wow. I dare you to ask one of those pampered people face to face.
I know your fondest wish is to be swept away by prince charming and taken care of, but are you really so self-involved in your own misery that you can't comprehend how challenging it might be to go through life with limited physical abilities?

as a person in a wheelchair, i prefer the term physically challenged. if you call me the *D* word i will not hesitate to correct you.
if you think about it the prefix DIS it means unable to do things. i am perfectly capable of doing things for myself. i can do most things you can do but they may have to be done differently, but nonetheless they WILL get done!

Well, golly gee and yikes! honey. Aren't you the one who said you'd kill yourself if you were stuck in a wheelchair? And now you say it's not challenging?
