Go to Chicago Watch and Jewelry at 29 East Madison Street, Suite #1203. The phone number is 312-236-1756. Ask for Lucy. I am 100% serious about this. I cannot say she is the cheapest, but she knows her jewelry. She will also not twist your arm to buy something you do not want. I have purchased several pieces for my wife from this store, my wife and I have been very happy.
My wife's birthstone is sapphire. I looked at numerous jewelers for a sapphire bracelet as a gift for my wife, but I could never find something I liked in my price range. After spending more than an hour with me, Lucy asked what I wanted and then MADE it for me.
If you cannot find what you want here, go up and down Wabash Avenue, there are literally hundreds of jewelry stores.
As far as the specific ring goes, buy a colorless (D) diamond. My wife's engagement ring is colorless and it is phenomenal, if I may say so myself.

First you have to know your diamonds, check the link below for that. The better the clarity (flaws or inclusions), cut (not the shape), color (d-j, D being colorless), and of course the caret the higher the price.
A great quality 1ct diamond as in almost perfect....can run you from $1000-2000 for the diamond alone. The rule of thumb that most follow, if they can afford it, is the ring you buy should cost about 2months of salary. Not everyone does this but that should give you an idea of about how much. You can buy from factory direct jewelers or even an individual and save yourself a lot of money. If you buy from an individual, make sure you meet at a jeweler so you can have the ring authenticated by them and not get ripped.
The site below can help you tremendously! Good Luck and congrats!!!

There's no one good place (usually), so shop around. Most jewelry stores have similar prices, but the ones in malls tend to be pricier than others. They all tend to have 'sales' half the time, giving the illusion of a good deal. Look for smaller family-owned stores, or if your intended won't mind, look for used stores and pawn shops.
You can get quite nice engagement rings for under $1,000, although if you have a little more there are even nicer ones for around $1,500 to $2,000. Don't bother with the whole 'four months salary' schtick - most brides would rather you spend the money on her in other ways (although there are exceptions).
Most engagement rings are a single diamond, but you can also go the 'anniversary ring' route with three to seven smaller diamonds - a much cheaper alternative that looks stunning on women with small fingers - or go with plain gold bands. A very pretty two-tone gold band may set you back $400 or less, so it's quite a viable alternative if you're under a budget constraint.

There is not really one good place to buy and engagement ring, mine came from Hanoush jewelers and it is beautiful. They had some nice ones at zales and Kay's too. Check around. Some have better warranties than others. For no extra charge they will clean mine fix it, even if I lose a diamond they will fix it for free.
You should spend what you can afford on it. You can get a nice ring for $800 or you could spend $10,000 it's all what you can afford. The most important factor you should decide on is what color gold to get, does she like yellow or white. Some women hate yellow gold and some like it. You should be able to tell if she wears silver or gold jewelry.
Good luck ring hunting.

You can get nice engagement rings for $200 and up. Don't go into debt over getting one, just get one within your price range. I would think an average price is around 600 to 800. Don't get fooled into thinking you need to get one worth thousands of dollars - it's all marketing strategies by the jewellers. Wish you luck shopping!

It doesn't really matter how much you spend, as long as it's real and it suits her personality. If you are at all unsure about her liking it, make sure that you can exchange it for something different. My hubby didn't do this and now I have a ring that I never wear...

Go to www.bluenile.com and take a look at what they have to offer...they have an interactive site that will explain the differences with the 4 C's (cut, color, clarity, carat) and you can take a look through their inventory. Those prices are going to be the closest to any store carrying similar quality...good luck!!
