ALL little dogs are great to own, but what the best dog for you is will depend entirely on your personality and lifestyle. It would be unfair to claim that a certian kind of toy breed is the best overall: that breed might be wonderful with one kind of person, but terrible with you (and vice versa). In order to decide the best breed of small dog for YOU to own, it is important to spend a lot of time evaluating your personality and lifestyle and an equal if not greater amount of time researching the characteristics of the different small breeds. Visiting, e-mail, and/or calling responsible local breeds is a great way to get to learn about the specifics of a certain breed. Do NOT go to a pet store: their dogs are almost always from puppy mills and are usually very poor representatives of what the breed is supposed to be like.

Maltese. Great little guys. Best personality I have ever seen in a dog. They are like people with four legs. Low maintenance.

I am not a little dog person, but I must say I love my Chinese Crested. Smart and totally hilarious personality! If you like hair there is also the powderpuff variety.
They are not as barky or nippy as many other toy breeds.

I like poms but just teach them not to bark. a pack of barking poms can drive you nuts. I know from experience around them. Also poodles are one of the most loving dogs i have ever seen.

PUGS. I have one and I LOVE him.. they are happy, intelligent, and easy to settle down (unlike many small dogs that are just crazy all the time).. they are said to be the most affectionate breed of dog (i agree) and they don't require much exercise, and none in hot/cold weather... very low maintenance. wont get bigger than 20 lbs unless you let it get fat.

I agree about Pugs! Cute rascals and low maintenance compared to other smaller breeds--no haircuts, easy grooming. They are very cuddly, very strong and agile, and aren't yippy like other small dogs.

I just got a chihuahua mix.. he's an absolute doll, and really tiny. i hear that mixes are better for dogs like chihuahuas and min pins because they tend to be less agressive.
