My boyfriend thinks he might be slightly allergic to dogs. Everyone says to get a poodle, but I don't want a poodle. I'm a black lab lover... (although I love ALL animals). Would a black lab wreak havoc on my boyfriend's suspected allergies????

Animal allergies are usually about the animal dander.
My experience is that labs do have quite a bit of dander, they also produce a lot of oil in their skin which makes them a little smelly.

Try having your boyfriend around other peoples black labs to see if he has a problem with them.

The only dog that I've ever heard of that's hypoallergenic is a Bichon Frise. They are great dogs.
But if you really want a Black Lab, you're probably out of luck as far as the allergies go. You can try to minimize the effects by brushing your dog outside daily, vacuuming often, and getting a HEPA filter for your home, but the allergy is still going to be there.

If your boyfriend is allergic to dogs he will definitely be allergic to Labs. Non-shedding dogs, like poodles and terriers, are best for people with allergies. There are a lot of different Terriers to choose from so you shouldn’t feel like a poodle is your only choice. Scottish terriers, West Highland White Terriers, Wheaten Terriers, etc. are some of the many breeds. Not to mention, Toto from Wizard of Oz was a terrier (and he was adorable!!!!)

If you decide to get a Lab, keep a lot of Benadryl handy. A runny nosed, red-eyed boyfriend is not sexy. Benadryl will cure your boyfriend’s allergies, but it may be unfair to drug him every time he’s at your house.

Heart o Gold is a dope. Labs produce a lot of dander and they do shed a lot, BUT they are one of the few breeds that do not smell. They have very resilient fur and it doens't hold dust and dirt. They need bathing very rarely.

They will probably affect your man's allergies, tho. However, my husband is allergic only to very short haired breeds like pits or rotts. Depends on the allergy I guess.

Yes, your boyfriend will have a problem with a Lab. Don't even try it. My daughter had a Lab and when I walked in the house I could feel it in the air. It's an "oppressive" feeling and slight odor in the air.

There are a lot of dogs that you could get that have close to no dander at all and allergic people do not have a problem with them. I have two Maltese and they don't bother me at all. Look the breeds up on the internet that are hypoallergenic. You don't have to stick with a Poodle if you don't like them.

Maltese are very intelligent. They also think they are very large dogs. If you get one (or two) don't tell them how small they are....

Animal allergies are nothing to mess around with.
if you really want a lab take him to a place where you can pet one and see if he is. or ask a friend if you can borrow it for a couple of days and find out.

Here is a list of good dogs for people with allergies from the best source - the AKC: http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=2588

Labs have a natural oil to their coat that tends to make them not very good to be around allergy sufferers - sorry.
