everyone will say the dog they have, i.e jack russell, lab, but it all depends on the family, I have a Doberman who is 9 months he is around a 3 year old, 2 year old. He is great yet he may not suit your family. Its how the family is with the dog which will decide how the dog is with the family. What ever breed you choose traeted right will be suitable. Take your family with you when choosing.
Good Luck.

Every one here is going to tell the breed of dog they have is the best dog for kids, well a lot of them are wrong. You need to research the many different breeds and make an educated decision on what you think is the best breed for you and your families lifesyle. AKC has a web site with descriptions of all recognized breeds of dog. AKC.org You could also read a few books like Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, or Idiots Guide to Chosing, Buying and Raising a Dog.
If properly trained and embraced as a beloved member of the family, any breed can make a great pet. With that said, some dogs are seen as more “kid-friendly” than others and, as a result, have become extremely popular among families. According to the AKC, the five most popular breeds in the United States are:
Labrador Retrievers are by far America’s most popular dog—more than 140,000 Lab puppies were registered last year with the AKC—and have a reputation for being playful, hardworking and affectionate toward children. The Lab is easily trained and is highly respected for his prowess at many jobs: as a guide dog for the disabled, a search-and-rescue dog, and for narcotics detection.
Golden Retrievers are sporty, easy to train and strong, but their most outstanding trait is character. They are outgoing and devoted companions to people of all ages, happy and trusting. They make great hunting companions, too.
German Shepherd are noble in appearence and character. This breed's courage, steadfast heart, and keen senses have endeared him to families for generations. Active and outdoorsy, German Shepherds are very fond of children and make wonderful companions.
Beagles love being around people and other animals. They are gentle, happy companions who thrive on affection and attention. They are also clever, quick, and, most of all curious. They need plenty of active exercise.
Dachshund has a lively, upbeat personality—spunky, curious and friendly. Originally bred to hunt badgers, Dachshund’s love to dig, romp and run. They are affectionate, especially with children, and enjoy going for walks and other forms of exercise
You should do your research before you bring any animal into your home. A dog your is a responsiblity for the rest of its life and should not be bought on impulse.

Labradoodles, the latest fashion icon in England. Brad pitt, blilly brag, all of the celebs have one, (slight exaduration)
but people forget to see the dog behind all of the fahion nonsense. The dog was bred purely because it has the joyuss personalty of the labrador, something everyone wants in a pet, and the non-shedding coat of the poodle. The Labradoodle is an intelegent, protective, yet playful dog. They are sold at about £600 depending on the colour and sex.
They are certainly a dog to grab peoples attention, instead of purebreeds, and they live longer that purebreeds too.
They love hunting (only if trained), agility - which could be an exiting experience for children to bond with the dog -, and learning.
If you would like more info on the breed, contact me at faria_blackstock@yahoo.co.uk

Checkout what Shortstack wrote great information. One thing about getting a shelter dog, you need to be experienced with owning dogs and being the leader of dogs to be sure you can help them. Shelter dogs are great but are returned so many times because people do not have time to retrain them and teach them the correct ways of living. I always recommend shelter animals since they too need love. If you get a shelter dog, take him on a 2 hour walk before taking him into your home. This will help him know that you are in charge of what is going on. Do not let the dog pull you on this walk. It is crucial to give this long walk because it shows your leadership and will calm the dog down before entering your home. You can then show him around your house and train him what is his or yours.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is great for a family, they are very loyal, loving. I found my dog easy to toilet train and he gives you lots of loving back.
We found that this breed was also very easy to look after if you have never had a dog or not had a family pet for years.

collies are fun , love able pets who love to play so getting a young pup who can grow up the a young family work well because when they (kids) have left home you have an older dog who would rather sit and get a pet than go for a hour long walk a day the only problem with collies is they need walks about twice a day when they are pups or one a day when they are old
jack Russel terriers are great to (for my own experience) but they can get a bit snappy when kids don't leave them alone but that is when they are older ,they love playing , walks , are fun and very love able , for a young family i would say get one when it is still a pup, i have the same reason for a jack Russel terrier as a collie but also they love their walks whatever the age
its up to you now to choose
all of my comments are for my own experience

all families are different . you have to consider the size of the place you live in. There are all sizes of dogs and breeds your family needs to do alot of research on the dog or puppy that you get. Lot to consider. good luck.
p.s. do like i did research but check out the local pet shelter or go to petfinder.org you would not believe the dogs who need love and loving home.
