It is not easy to get a home improvement grant for an individual's home. The Housing and Urban Development in their Grants Available page makes it clear that they do not provide grants to individuals -- hence no grants for a person to buy a home or do improvements http://www.hud.gov/grants/index.cfm

"While HUD does not offer direct grants or loans to individuals, we do work through local governments and non-profit organizations to make financial assistance and counseling available."

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two FREE sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes.

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs

You can find all HOME IMPROVEMENT GRANTS on this page of the CFDA http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.FUNCTIONAL_PROGRAM_TXT_RPT.SHOW?p_arg_names=func_cat_cd&p_arg_values=MM -- note that most of them are loans, and not grants. The very few that are grants have very specific eligibility requirements. Fof example:

OBJECTIVES: Section 504 loans and grants are intended to help very low-income owner-occupants in rural areas repair their properties.

15.141 DOI Indian Housing Assistance
http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.PROGRAM_TEXT_RPT.SHOW?p_arg_names=prog_nbr&p_arg_values=15.141

This effort is assisted by the Indian Health Service (Department of Health and Human Services) which provides water and sanitary systems for houses repaired or built with HIP funds.

There are no grants for personal home repair. You may be able to contact your county social services to see if they have a program to help make certain repairs. We have a few programs through the county.
Also our local Chamber of Commerce has a "Christmas in July" program where they collect donations for materials to make repairs and recruit volunteers to do the work. Check with your Chamber of Commerce to see if you have a similar program.

Good luck!

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a grant for home repair. I work as an auditor for governments (cities, villages, etc.) and nobody offers anything like that. Generally, no one else would have any incentive to offer something like that except to scam you.

If your house happens to be in a historic district or a landmark, there are a number of tax credits or grants you can rehabilitation and renovation. I would start by contacting your "State Historic Preservation Office." You can Yahoo search that term and your state and find some contact info. Each state has one and those experts can help you out with renovations to your house.

There are a lot of scholarships available. I suggest going to Google and conducting a search from there. I actually won a $5,000 scholarship about a year ago, and I recently found another contest by the same company for a $10,000 scholarship. It's free to enter, so there's no reason not to.
