If they are on a limited income maybe stamps with some pretty paper... offer to do some chores that they would be unable to do, gift cards for a restaurant....store, grocery store... :o)

A nice vine potted plant would be nice...Plants give people a sense of need. With watering, pruning..etc. It would give her something to do all year long...and also the live plant puts oxygen back in the air..so not a bad thing for asthmatics.. Being 70, something pretty in the room, gives them something to look at and tend to.

An inhaler! And also batteries for their hearing aides!

If they live in a colder part of the country you might get them a humidifier to use in the winter. It will help their lungs when they sleep.

a gift certificate to their local drugstore, where they fill perscriptions. Or, GC for food store. A bus pass if they are mobile enough to get out on their own (my grandmother has her own car and can still drive, but she loves taking the bus because she's a people watcher.)
