Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

It was a question I asked. I wanted to know after you reading these few words of wisdom..whther it put thing into context for you. I am sorry that some of you felt the need to mock. Your right. But do stop and think of all the wrongs in this world and just maybe some of what is written will strike a cord with you.

I have broad shoulders; a good sense of fun and I am also very tolerant, so fire away with your insults.

I'm still not changing my dress for anyone.

I skipped all that long bit in the middle, but I read those last sentences and they were kind of profound...but seriously, what are you talking about? I really, really don't understand the point of that. I am all for whacky people here on Answers, they make me laugh, but this one didn't, and just seemed like a waste of space. Sorry for being mean, I'm not really that mean. Just think you should save it for funny comments/questions which we would all understand and enjoy.

~~~ Piggy,,,, I graduated hi-school in '71 and have studied Eastern Thought, Asian Martial Arts, Comparitve Religion and Mythology, Poetry and Lyric ,,,and read from The Great Thinkers of History. I am Atheist and have always practiced The Golden Rule with clear conscience. I have found The Desiderata to be a finde Creed in which to follow and have recommended it hundreds of Searchers. It was very good of you to share it with this audience, who desperately needs it. Disregard those without the patience to even read it or comprehend it. They are not ready.
You know, among all the insulting & nonsensical stuff here, something pleasant is posted and here we are unable to resist bagging the poster.
Personally, I've always liked Desiderata - good philosophies to live by, and enjoyed reading it again. Thanks Piggy. Happy Holidays to you too.
sounds reasonable and each of us need to realize that we have had our successes and our failures. we should continue striving to be the best we can be without worrying about what others say or think about us -- but this is easier said than done
Thanks for this, I have heard something similar before but its good to remind ourselves of this over and over again, because life sort of washes the precious bits off.
Thanks again and take care
