I use chillis in cooking a lot but there is a limited choice in my local supermarket.I like the taste rather than the heat that really hot ones produce.I would ideally like to grow my own.

Find the ones you like best, and use the seeds in them to grow your own - alternatively Thompson & Morgan have a very good seed catalogue - find them on the web. The heat from the chillis does not come from the vegetable itself but from the membrane containing the seeds.

There are over 200 varieties of chilli, and you can grow your own, just go to a good garden nursery, and they will advise you, the small ones are quite easy to grow, and you can grow them in pots!! if you like the taste rather than the heat, if you cut the chilli open and remove the seeds, this greatly reduces the heat, as the heat is in the seeds and not the skin, also remove any of the white membrane as well, as there is quite a bit of heat in there too! hope this helps!

Unable tell you how many kinds of chillis there are. However, the most likely source for the answer is anyone from South America or Mexico - if you have any near you, the Salsa Culture etc.

You can get chilli seeds by collecting them from the next chilli pepper you buy and scraping them out and drying them off on a plate on your windowsill in the sun.

If all this fails, tune into the Hot Chili Peppers and relax.

Try Indian shops for what you want.

I buy my seeds from the local garden centre, they are easy to grow, dont use seeds from supermarket fruit coz they are probably from F1 hybrid plants and the seeds wont produce the same fruit as the mother plant

Try your local Thai shop, the one near me has far more choice for things like that than the local Tesco.
