Definitely a variety of different music and old party favorites. For us we have a few definite songs, fist dance, introduction of the wedding party and him and I have each chosen a song to dance with each other to, like a groom's choice and a bride's choice. Other then that we have everything from country, to old disco to good old rock and roll! Sit down with an experienced DJ who can really help with making the choices and making sure that everyone has a good time. Also get references from the DJ's you interview, talk to the venue that your reception will be at, the coordinator there may know some good DJ's who have helped create some amazing reception memories. Congrats!

Play off of requests. Guests like dancing to and listening to whatever music they want, so they will always make requests. It upsets the guests when they are told "Sorry, I can't play that song because it wasn't on the list. See, the bride told me specifically what songs to bring, and that wasn't on it." Or, they get even more upset when they're told "Sorry, I was specifically told not to play that song."
There might be some songs out there that you hate and would rather not hear. But if they are songs that your guests want to hear, will it really hurt you any to tolerate it for 3 minutes to ensure that your guests are having a good time?

Seeing as how its "your day", I think you should be allowed to play whatever you want. Whether its Jazz, Country, Hip Hop, etc. I do however, think that it should be age appropriate. If you are going to have lots of families, or children there, refrain from the music that is innapropriate. The best idea is to have a variety of music so that everyone gets to hear something that they like.

When people RSVP'd to my wedding, I had a line on the RSVP card for them to write a song they'd like to hear at the reception. People loved the idea, and they wrote our playlist for us.
