he has never been that fond of dog treats, and he is 3 years old and 14 pounds. (he is a long-haired chihuahua--the vet said that his weight is fine, because he is big for a chihuahua, so he's not fat or anything.) i've tried several different brands of dog treats, but he just doesn't like them. i have tried small ones, big ones, meaty ones, cheesy ones, chewy ones, crunchy ones etc. and he just doesn't like them. but he LOOOOOVES cat treats. i have 2 cats also, so there is always plenty of cat treats around, and he just goes crazy for them. are they okay for him to eat? i was giving him some today, and on the label it had a chart of how many to give a cat. should i follow that label for a dog? it said for a cat weighing 10-14 pounds, that 20-30 treats per day is a good amount. should i give my dog that much? i gave him about 10, and i gave my cat (who is also 14 pounds) 20.
advice?

First off never give a cat more then 1-3 treats per day otherwise they will confuse the treats with food. Also you shouldn't let your dog eat cat treats because it is bad for their digustive system. Talk to a vet and explain to the vet that you've been giving your dog cat treats.

There are other things that you can give your dog that can be considered as a treat and is good for them. There is bone that helps clean their teeth and prevent gum disease. Also most dogs are found of pigs ears.

You should talk to your vet about this situation. You might want to make an appointment. But just because your dog doesn't like dog treats doesn't mean that you can't give him other kinds of treats. I use to feed my mom's dog pieces of steak and ham when she was good. Something a long that line would be good. Just don't overdue it. No more that 5 a day sounds acquite.

You should not give a dog cat treats or cat food it can make them sick because it has the nutrients for a cat not a dog so try different dog treats and if he doesn't like them well reward him by playing or a good petting and he will be just as happy.

You really have to be careful when giving a dog cat treats. They are not formulated for dogs and could make him sick with continued use. There is no rule that says you HAVE to give treats. You could use positive reinforcement instead and give treats once in a while. Animals should get all their needs met by good food....treats should be like that box of cookies that you buy once in a while...a treat. Not part of their everyday life. And you only have to give a couple...not a bunch at a time. I think they tell you to give a lot on the label to increase their sales! Good luck.

Cat fodd and treats are bad for dogs. If he doesn't like dog treats, try giving him a little low sodium, lean lunch meat or something like that. But you shouldn't give him cat treats. One every once in awhile is ok but definately not daily. Human food is ok for dogs as long as it is not full of sugar and fat and salt. Try some vegitables or ice.

Yes; cat treats are higher in protein. I'm not sure about treats but the cat food contains an additional enzyme that cats must have. Dogs can eat cat food, but cats cannot live on dog food. Cats can eat dog food and treat also, but it would not work for long. Cats would lack enough protein and lack that specific enzyme.

I think you shouldn't. cat treats are higher in proteins that just don't do good things to dogs innards. Try using a dog cookie recipe from online and make your own doggie treats. My mom's dog just loves them and they are healthier. The cat treats just have way too much fat in them for your cat, either. It leads to obesity which leads to heart trouble.

I've heard that cat treats and cat food have too high a fat content for dogs and that they're not good for them.

These are your cats, but this is your grandmothers house. She obviously isnt a cat loving type of person that you are. I would keep the cats in your room or find another place for them to stay. For the scratching problem, they make cat claw covers called soft paws (sold for 20 bucks at Petsmart and other pet supplies stores) You can get them in pink, red, blue, etc. and they are the next option to declawing. My cat wears them and we have had no trouble. Have a talk with your Grandmother about he way she is treating your cats and let her know you think it would be best if she just ignored them instead of being violent towards them. Poor kitties!

no way. dont give your dog cat treats. if he doesnt want dog treats, then dont give him any. have you tried cutting up a winnie into small slices and using those a treats. cut them up, put them in a zip lock bag and put it back into the fridge. no matter what kind of treat your giving your dog, limit the amount per day to 2 or 3! dont give your cat that many treats either. like i said 2 or 3 a day!
