Lambrusco??? Mount Veeder???? Yellow Tail???? Ugh. Nothing against liking those, but they are not even close to "the best" red wine for under $50.

Your question has a thousand or more possible answers. For *my* $50 and under I would purchase the following:

2000 Boroli Barolo
2001 E Guigal Chateauneuf du pape
2002 Archery Summit Premier Cuvee
2003 Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir
2003 Sineann Wyeast Pinot Noir
2003/2004 Sineann Old Vine Zinfandel
2004 Yangarra Estate Grenache Blend
2001-2003 Don Melchor Concha Y Toro (Cab)

But, it all depends on the deal that I got, what I needed the wine for, and a whole host of other things. Good luck in your search.

Laurel Glen 2002 Sonoma Mountain Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a great red wine for about $50-$60 in a class of others which cost double that or more. Others would be Vine Cliff Winery 2002 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for $36 or Terra Valentine 2002 Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon for $38 or Ch. Ste. Michelle 2003 Ethos Syrah for $27

Taste in wine is really specific to the person who is tasting it. My personal favorite red wines are Italian Imports:

Chianti ~ ONLY GET THE IMPORTED KIND (you can tell by the purple label up on top). Chianti is a dry, though mild flavored wine. It doesnt have much in the way of tanins, so despite the lack of sweetness, it's not got a bitter flavor. It's a very distinguished wine, subtle but rich flavors (in my opinion). A bottle of Rufino brand will run about $11.50, and a bottle of Rufino Chianti Classico Reserva Ducale (their upper brand) will run in the $20s.

Lambrusco ~ Harder to find a good bottle in the states, lambrusco is a sweet red wine that's actually sparkling (basically a red champagne if you will). It's light, goes well with sweeter dishes. Cost varies based on size of bottle and whether or not it's actually imported.

EDIT: I'm going to throw this out there again for Stalker's benefit: Taste in wine is specific to the person drinking it. The best wine tasters recognize this fact and a "good" bottle of wine generally falls under the category of whatever tastes "good" to the drinker. Personally? pinot noir? zin? I hate the stuff because it tastes HORRIBLY bitter. While i could sit here and "ugh" stalker's taste in wine, however, I won't for the simple reason that people with more aged taste sometimes prefer the tanins of a bolder red wine while i prefer something "younger" in flavor. It's all about personal choice. (and I should note that, while i haven't tasted it, yellow tail has a good reputation for a decent though reasonably cheap bottle of wine... Oh, and a good syrah is also a prime choice for me).

Two suggestions. They are both inexpensive but they are both very good wines. Both have been featured on Splendid Table as quality inexpensive wines, so don't laugh.
First, Black Box Cab Sauvignon- Runs about $24 but there are about 3 to 4 bottles worth in the box. The only boxed wine I have ever heard featured on Splendid Table. Very good. I have some at home now.
Second. Little Yellow Tail (any red). A very good Austrailian wine. Usually runs around $14 per bottle.

To me that is like asking what is the best car on 4 wheels. A good wine to me is what you are doing at the time you drink it. Is it served at dinner ... then it all depends what's for dinner. Or is it an evening drink with music and candlelight? So what is a good red wine? ... it all depends what you are doing while you are drinking it.

Locally to me, there is Hattaras Red by Duplin Wine. It is one of the best red wines I have ever had. I am not a wine expert though, so it is just my opinion.
