My pick would be King Canute.
He's the one who...when his advisors and other members of his court started flattering him to the skies...he made them all walk with him to the seashore. He ordered the waves to stop breaking...and they completely ignored his regal "orders", of course. He then pointed out to everyone that...though he was king...he was just a man, and to not waste his time with nonsense flattery.
He's also the one who instructed his wise men to come up with a saying that would always fit every single situation...no matter what. They pondered for over a year, and the best saying they could come up with was: "This, too, shall pass."
Instead of being insulted, King Canute was delighted, and rewarded them for their great wisdom.

King Louie.
He was the king of the swingers, the jungle V.I.P. But he reached the top and had to stop and (frankly) that's what's bothering me.
