I've used a few different brands over the years and would recommend a model with a fan. I have a Mr. Coffee Dehydrator with a fan, that I picked up at K-Mart for $30. The advantage of using a model with a fan is that it dehydrates quicker. Beef jerky on my unit takes about eight to ten hours, as opposed to a mdel without takes 20 to 24 hours. I hope this helps

Most Wal-Marts sell 16-ounce bags of World Kitchens beef jerky for around $8.50. It takes around 3 lbs. of beef to make 1 lb. of jerky, so the "economics" price point needs to be less than $3.00 per pound for beef + ingredients + energy cost + amortized dehydrator cost.
