I explained it this way to my niece, who at 16 wanted a tatoo:

I asked her to remember when she had posters of the Backstreet Boys and other teenybopper posters all over her bedroom wall and she kind of made a face and said yuck. I asked her why she didn't like them anymore and she said they were so over. I asked her if she remembered how much she was into them and how would she feel now if she had tatood one or all of their names on her somewhere? She freaked, but she got the point.

I love tatoos but you have to wait until you have some life experience before you know what you want to go through life with, after all, families fall apart, husbands and wives divorce, presidents change. Outside of death and taxes, tattoos are the only absolutely permanent thing in your life. They will tell total strangers who you are, or were. They will stop some people from wanting to know you and give others the idea that you can be known very easily very quickly.

Never tattoo your own name, duh stupid, the name of your mother (cause that's just too creepy), or any word or saying in a language you aren't completely fluent in. some people like the sanscrit or farsi because it is so creative, but have absolutely no knowledge of the language. If the artist isn't fluent in that language either then only mid easterners will know what the heck you have written on your body. And, it could be very ugly.

My sister have been given a very small tattoo of a musical observe on her ankle. decrease back while she grow to be enjoying harmonica in a blues band, it appeared fantastically cool. yet now that she's a porfessional businesswoman, she particularly regrets it. this is embarrassing, and he or she dreads the circumstances while she has to positioned on a skirt or gown to paintings-proper applications. no person has ever mentioned something, yet she concerns that they are thinking "trashy" and that they are going to lose appreciate for her. the element approximately tattoos is: at the same time as they'd be in form superb now, they probable won't continually be. and whether it is your form superb now, your form will probable replace. And tattoos, of direction, a permanant (or a minimum of very perplexing and painful to eliminate, and it nevertheless leaves a scar). So yeah. i'm making a huge gamble that in the time of a few unspecified time sooner or later on your existence, you will experience sorry approximately it!

Any kind of drug reference. My Uncle has the 7-UP spot smoking a joint. He is now clean and sober for 10 years and is embarrassed by it. It seemed cool at 22 but at 41 not so cool.

Let me put it this way. The ONLY tattoo that people should NOT regret later in life is with their child's name on it. Yes, it's possible you could get angry with your child, but you still love them no matter what.

ANY tattoo on your chest. When you're sixty and have saggy boobs, it will no longer be pretty. I promise.

Also, (and I know someone who did this!) nothing on the head of your penis. I'm sure that would hurt quite badly.
